What’s awesome is spending lots of time on the phone with OfficeMax customer service trying to get them to do something about my December 10th order of bubble envelopes that still hasn’t even shipped. They claim one business day shipping on most orders and have the delivery date on the order projected as December 12th, 2003 which is practically a million billion years ago. The status code even says “PIP – order received, filling order in delivery center” like I’m some sort of sub-idiot man-jerk.
I am in fact typing this up as I’m sitting on hold listening to OfficeMax advertisements (“when you think ink, think OfficeMax!”). This is the third time I’ve called them today, the previous two times I’ve been transferred to other departments. One time I wound up on the phone with a bank for some reason which, the lady I was talking to there agreed, was totally the wrong place for me to be.
This is actually an improvement over the two other occasions I’ve called them since the 10th asking about my order. Both of those times I was told someone would call me back and nobody did. So I at least feel a bit better about being transferred around even if it means each time I reach a dead end I have to hang up and call back and wait for one of their representatives to be free. I at least feel like I’m just one transfer away from a solution rather than waiting for a phone call that will never ever come, ever.
If there is ever a market for tell-all books by musicians (possibly with lots of swearing) on the subject of postage and envelopes and office supplies and maybe the crushing impact of this knowledge on a person’s ability to write songs, I am going to god damn write it.
Still on hold. I hope I’m at least getting punk rock indie cred or something for this.

Retail is a money making business. Try it. OMax will make it – even through all these comments and complaints. I will say that most of the disgruntled folks writing to this site really need to take spelling lessons. Maybe that’s part of the reason(s) they don’t have a job???? =O)

OMAX released 2QTD 2005 results the other day…they lost $22M. The reality is that Boundless is a joke, they don’t carry top line tech in the stores, stores are understaffed and people go to Wally World to stock up on BTS goods. This company will be Chapter 11 in 2 years, closing stores left and right and a memory in less than 5 years. There is a reason they’re #3 in a 3 horse race.

I have worked with office max for close to a year. they ‘started’ me out at $6 an hour.. yeah $6 a fucking hour. and up until a few weeks ago I hadnt even heard of a raise. although they pulled out of thier cheap asses a dollar raise =) which is making me happy for now. but one thing i do not appreciate is how offixe max handles the register. at my store there may be 4 or 5 different customers in line before the register ‘bitch’ gets help from another associate. sometimes people go as far as to refuse help to me. i cant stand it when there are so many customers and no help. this goes back to the whole issue about not enough emplyees. plus, I think we’ve had 5 or 6 people quit in the past 2 months. its unbelievable. although right now Im happy to admit that im a very personable person set to make people enjoy there visit at omax. i dont let anyone leave without having a few words or even a conversation. something just to let them know i care. thats more than anyone else i work with can say. they are fucking dead beats sometimes… =(

I just got hired by Office Max two months ago. I’m 17 and working part-time, and let me tell you, this store is unfuckingbelievable. It’s non-stop selling with the boundless shit. If you don’t even communicate over the radio they think you’re a corpse. “Josh you still there?” So I have to say crap like “Yeah I was helping a customer.” But wait, even if I say that, they have to reccommend add-ons and tell me more shit to sell. My managers and co-workers are pretty cool, except for one (manager)…she does not shut up. I was walking on the same aisle as her and she got pissed off because I should have been walking around the store helping others. To top that off, after helping a customer she wanted me to go BACK and give the customer a MaxPerks card, which in all honesty is a retarded program.
Speaking of retarded, the MaxAssurance bullshit is outrageous. We have a sales leader who whenever he hears someone mention a customer buying a “maxassurance” qualified product, he starts screaming over the radio “MAXASSURANCE, MAXASSURANCE, MAXASSURANCE, MAXASSURANCE!” The worst part is selling MaxAssurance on bullshit like SURGE PROTECTORS. What the hell is that?
Anyways, I could go on and on, but seeing as OfficeMax is my first part-time job, I think anything from here on out will a bit easier to handle.
I’ll be going in at 6:00 today, even though I had the day off. They just love calling me and asking me to come in and tempt me with the “You’ll get more hours!” I’ll also get more close to quitting, even if I’ve only worked there two months.

Just take a look around you–slavery may have been abolished and this may be a free country, but the white man still runs everything back when slavery was in effect. What happened is that ideas and practices were shifted, relabeled and anything else you can think of. It is the same thing when a company cant afford to pay anyone for work but they still have to get their ‘million dollar’ products out of the door. In the meantime, all the money made gets used up in overhead and the rest goes to the owners. Notice that it wasnt called ‘profits’ since business practices are horrible in this day and age. All it amounts to is passing the buck. I can’t afford shit either but that doesnt mean you have to cut out costs just to cover your sorry ass. Thanks guys, hope your wife and kids have a nice roof over their heads. Why dont you try living in your means for once?

The reason they push max’s so much is because of club max. The district that sells the most with the exception of some other stores, the managers and dm get a free trip to florida or wherever. This country really needs to be brought into the future though. We are still stuck in old times. We need to be able to have some people work only to provide essential resources and services, and have everyone else live in a decent house if they choose not to work. We only need a few businesses folks. The whole idea of competition is bullshit and you know it. It only makes one company work hard enough to not go under until another one comes along and wins. It makes no sense. We need a stagnant economy, those are the best, no wins, no losses. Work for the future everyone!

Follow-Up to #113 (John):
1. Anything you do on the register is known because you are logged in and it is all there to see.
2. If someone was watching you they could look into that and ask you why you did it and prosecute you very easily.
3. I have seen people go down at OMAX and they don’t play. One dude went away for a while b/c he had previous problems.
4. If it has been 2 weeks all of these things don’t matter, just don’t price override anything anymore.

I’ve been with OMAX for about six years now. I started off as a part time associate, I am now an assistant mgr of logistics. I have seen so much shit happen over the years its not even funny.
The main problem is that the company is flat out cheap. We send our salas managers out canvassing because we refuse to spend money on advertising.
We sell the worst brands (though recently that seems to be getting better).
We constantly cut hours and we pay shit.
We play games with our associates and screw them over big time.
We push maxes and add-ons down customers’ throats. It’s called relentless customer service (which translates to harass the customer).
We recently had our annual reviews for all mgrs and supervisors. You basically get rated in 2 categories: sales and performance. You get rated form 0-5 (5 being the best) You need a 2.5 or higher in both categories to get a raise. After all the reviews had been written and approved the company changed the rules. They said you now need a 3.0 or higher to get a raise. They did this the week the reviews were supposed to be given!
I could write all day about the shit that goes on in this company but I won’t, I’ll post again later.

can’t wait for the day this company goes under. re: the price over-ride it depends who the register was signed on to. In other words if you “jumped” on a register logged into an associate before that person logged off you’re in the clear; however if you sold a MaxA with that sale and gave yourself the spiff that could lead back to you. As long as the markdown was under $5 or so it wouldn’t be a red flag. Realize managers and LP can look back on that anytime.

I finally quit OMAX last month, after 3 years of hell. I worked there b/c it was near and they gave me any hours I wanted. The service depends mostly on the store and the people that work there. Our store manager did a great job at finding the right people for the job. We always worked to satisfy the customer, even if we had do stuff we were not allowed to do. There were cases where the customer was just stupid and yes, we have been known to get unpolite, but mostly, we had mostly satisfied customers.
When we had to deal with anybody outside our store, like a different location or the warehouse, we found the rest of the company to be made up of idiots. With what I learned over the last 3 years, I would never shop at OMAX unless I found a specific store (like ours) with a dedicated team that would take care of your issues if any arise.

I work at an officemax and I freely admit that the place has some big problems. Upper managment that dictates how everything should be done without every having worked inside an actual store. Random project due dates that they pulled out of there ass. Pushing extended warrenties on thing the customer hasn’t even decided to buy yet. And career retail managers that are convinced that there 20 or 30 years at this store or that store gives them wisdom when 90% of there knowledge was obsolete in the fifties. A lot of problems that will never be changed until it’s far too late. But on the other side customers are a royal pain in the ass. Just a few examples…a woman cursing at cashier because she didn’t know what “thingy” that woman was looking for…a man throwing a cd player when he was asked if he had a reciept when he tried to return it…several hundred customers calling the store for tech support on items they didn’t even buy at omax or want to return thing six months after they bought it.
A ton of problems on all sides and everyone thinks they are in the right. They’re usually wrong.

To be honest with you all, all retail jobs suck. It only gets good when your part of management, and even then it can suck. But, money is money, and your not getting any honey with the women riding a bike. So, you get up in the morning, eat your breakfast, and get prepared to be eaten by the customers and/or your management. Pay sucks in retail, we all know that to be true. People step on you constantly, this too, you know is true. But remember this, Fastfood is 1 billion times worse. Pays even less. You will be riding a bike, this I will promise you. You go to lunch, eat the food that you have to make for others all day, then in 2 years time your about 30 pounds heavier. This is life. Live it. Love it. Make something of it. Sit around and piss and moan about what you do for cash, and guess what? Your there another year and didn’t even learn anything. I got hired at my store and ended up showing our management new ways that sell. Did they learn? Did they use my new techniques? No. Why? Because they’re here at OfficeMax another year. And, they will be there next year. And the year after that. And me? I will be in a better place and making more money. Why? Because while I was there, I learned new tricks of the trade. I also knew that the people who shop there often own their own business. You treat them with respect and give them the ultimate shopping experience and they look at you and wonder, “I wonder if he’s looking for another job or a way out of this place?” It happens to me all the time. Do I accept tips? Damn straight I do! Do I pocket them quick? Damn straight again! Do I send them to another business that will install the video card that I just sold to them? Damn straight I don’t! I pop them a card, they call my cell, and after work I make just one more stop and do the job for them at half the price and guess what else? I pocket more money and drive my happy ass on home.
I just gave myself a raise for the day. About 50 bucks more that will guarantee me a piece of ass from the little woman. OfficeMax is happy. The customer is happy. I am happy. And the little woman? She’s off shopping and she is happy. Everybody is happy.
Why? Because we all got a “Max-Ass”!
Boogie down!
Don’t put OfficeMax down just because your not being treated like a God. Even managers are treated like poop. If you don’t like to be treated like crap, then quit your job and live on the streets. Because guess what? It’s hard all over. Stay in school, get good grades, and stay off of the meth. But, this still doesn’t guaranty that your going to be treated like a crown prince. Chances are that you won’t even come close.

Its very interesting as i scrolled down the list of replies. I read some, and skipped some. So, here’s my nickel on all of this.
No matter what issue you have with officemax, you ask a manager in a retail store for the corp. number, and i bet they are going to help you. Why you ask? Because corp. ppl do not want to deal with customers, they deal with numbers because thats what rides their ass. I bet if you took your valid issue(s) to corp, they will take care of you. They can’t afford to lose a single customer.DO THE CUSTOMER SURVEYS ON RECEIPTS! DONT BUY WARRENTIES BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT TAKE CARE OF YOU. I shit you not, i have seen computers (new) get written off to take care of customers because they were not sold what they asked for (5 fucking years after it was sold) This of course was an extreme, but true, example of results from cusomters bitching non stop to corporate.
Michael F (the original owner of officemax) is laughing his ass off to the bank. Not planned, but it was the best business move ever! Boise (paper company that bought officemax) got screwed. They ended up having to sell parts of their business the cover/make-up for the HUGE fuck-ups that came to light. The fact of the matter is that OfficeMax simply sucks all around now. They will never be able to compete with leaders in retail, ever.
Their customer base is not great at all. They close store across the country (over 500 to date, not including a HEADQUARTERD) and open a few new ones in other locations. Do you ever here about the closings? NO. The point is that if you are in retail, no matter what position, you do don’t mean shit to them (sorry to break it to you) They will replace anyone, anytime, anywhere if they so damn please. And that goes for most companies.
The company as a whole has been losing money as since the CEO scandal (officemax basically claimed money that did not exist in order to make the 4th quarters look great because they did not hit their plan at all LOL)
Most officemax stores (if you haven’t seen) are clearancing over 70% of their stores. What does this mean to the employee? You should be looking for a new job because every item that was clearance, that was sold, will slowly bring down the company one way or another (loss of profit on product) They are trying to make some money back due to 2 very big lawsuits (BY A COMPANY and BY THE CUSTOMERS) Retails bread and butter.
I worked for the company and i packed my bags and headed to the hills! The company is so poorly ran it is not even funny. At “my store”, get this, had a store manager that sexually harassed over 4 female employees. Among the other issues with this nut case. They all reported it to HR. It was found to be true and NOTHING happened. He still has a job (surprised he didn’t go to jail) and backed HIM over THEM. How screwed up is that? This manager is literally flies on shit. I couldn’t work for a company, have my name associated with a company, that didn’t stand a safe workplace and moral values. I’m still trying to locate/contact those four and have them file a lawsuit.
Well, i’m done ranting. For those still working at officemax, its not worth it. For those shopping at officemax, stay clear. Try not to support something that is pure evil. If you need paperclips, do what you’ve gotta do:)

Ha… At my Store the managers use the same excuse for everything. “We need to save pay roll.” so they cut hours. The sad part is that in the front window there is a HUGE sign saying WE ARE NOW HIRING. I have been working for office max over a year now and i have seen it get really bad. Our store is a high volume store with lots of customers every day. It was fun working there about a year ago now it just got really bad. We are always out of stock on the big sales and we never have the printer the customer wants. So how can a sales associate like me sell a printer with a max that we dont have? to me its all bull shit and the managers and even the DM along with Corp Sucks at managing everything. If you walk into our store you will find that the ladder wheeles are all bent to shit, thats a law suit waiting to happen . you will find that the vents dont work the way they should, the Air conditioning breaks every year, and we spend more time complaining about it then doing something about it. The managers sit in their office doing shit looking at books and stats. I Have never seen any of the managers try and change anything. Fix the ladders Replace the Air Conditioning system, or even try to get more merchendise in the store for us to sell. The only thing our managers are doing is sitting on there asses “Trying to reduce hours so they can save pay roll.” Whats more that pisses me off is that they even took our shrink reward away. so now the only benifit for me to stop shrink is not to loose my job… like thats really threat to me. Im off to finding a new and better part time job, but until i find one im stuck pissing off customers , ripping off customers by selling the max so i can make my little reward percentage of that sale. there is nothing they can do for me to work for them even if they gave me a $10 rais. thats right i have been working for exactly 1 year and 4 months and i still havent got a rais and every day i say something but nothing happens. they say all retail is the same, it is but i dont think nothing is as bad as office max casue they cant get there shit strait thats starting from the top all the way down to the retail level. So really like commet 133 every one is just trying to save corps asses with all these lawsuits and shit. I say office max will go out of business in about another 3-4 years if that.

No whats really funny is that they dont rely on associates to bring in customers they rely on the Zip Code Servey to bring in customers. What the fuck are zip codes going to tell you. If Corp had a fucking clue they would look at a book that i saw once sitting on the managers desk by the company named POLK. They had every break down of every area in the U.S. From average wage, age, houses, ethnics, religon, and any backround of some sort. this book had everything you need to know about the people in your area. But I guess not Zip codes seem to be doing the trick after all we have been doing it for about a year now and there are no improvements. The only one who got out of that good deal was the programer who had to write like a few lines of code just to ad a box that says enter zip code. last month i only put in 50 zip codes. The manager was made because i was the loest in the store for ZIP CODEs. Really, Who give a fuck about ZIP codes. i was below 5%. now i have to be above 50% or i get written up. to me that is a bunch of bull shit . Zip codes dont do shit for the company and they dont seem to care too so i really dont.

Zip codes do serve a purpose, sorta. It’s used to see if there’s enough people comming in from a distance to see if a new store in another area would be successful. Honestly, in my area, within 5 miles of me IN EACH DIRECTION there’s a Staples. The next closest OMX, 10 miles away.
It’s a proven fact that more than 1/2 of the customers don’t even know what store their in. Staples is capitalizing on that by opening 4 or 5 stores for every store we have. We loose more and more customers every day because on their way to OMX, they pass 2 or 3 Staples or Depots.

Yup that happens every day when im at reg. people write checks and they have no clue what store they are in. pluse why would a customer go to an office max 10 miles away when there is a staples right down the road. and because office maxs budget right now sucks how the hell can they afford to open new stores to be 5 miles instead of 10 miles away. to me that just means that there are going to have to save more money in order for them to do that there going to have to cut hours for the average employee and have them work harder for less.

I find it so totally righteous that there is still a vicious Office Max grudge match going on here. You realize that’s almost two full years, right Bradlay?

News from #109: They will be losing their number one grosser in Max A’s because he was called insuboridate, (didn’t respond to a manager page during a $1200 laptop sale) has a bad attitude, (failed to talk about personal problems unrelated to work when management asked him to) and isn’t a team player ( when failed to “high five” an operations supervisor for remembering to temporarily sign off his register). They can kiss my white ass… I quit.

More news from store #109: They will be losing another employee who is able to put up some nice sales numbers for the store. The managers have no respect for any employees that works there. They will be left with only people that know how to ring on reges. Alpha Geek and I are the only employees who know a lot about electronics and furniture and consistently are in the top 5 for selling maxes for the week. There is no other employee in the store who is knowledge able in both furniture and electronics. They will also be losing a employee that has been working there for 5 years now, and basically there number one cashier. So all I have to say good luck finding people to replace us.

selling a 3.99 maxassurance on a 8.99 pencil sharpener is alot like wiping your ass BEFORE you take a shit…it just doesn’t make sense. this is just one example of what these gay ass managers expect us to do. can’t wait to get out of that shit hole!
