I think that it is funny that most of those riffs are ones that that people learn on the guitar when they first begin to play. There are some good riffs in there, however. I remember how cool I felt the first time that I pulled of the intro riff to “Crazy Train.” Man, I miss those days!!!

Matthew Sweet - Sick of Myself
Sloan - Sensory Deprivation, She Say What She Means, and Money City Maniacs, and The Good In Everyone

I know i’m all late posting to this thread… but what the heck is “Plug In Baby - Muse”? I have never heard of this song, and it seems to be out of place on this list…? Am I crazy?

You can hear the muse song here: http://www.muse.mu/

Still seems out of place on a ‘Top’ list like this. and I know QotSA are hot now, but I think it’s premature to put them on there, too.

Opinions are like assholes. They stink like shit and everyone’s got one. Im about to fart my fecal matter of fact out right now. For starters, punk bands blow dick and do not have anything close to what i would call a “riff”. The pure lack of Pantera shows that everyone doesnt have a shit clue what the fuck they are talking about. Dime was one of the master riffers of the metal guitar (cowboys from hell, cemetery gates, im broken, ….). Even Steve Vai himself is quoted saying that he could not keep up with dimebag. What about Eric Johnson with cliffs of dover? The top list is decent, but the cat that picked Blink 182? Are you fucking serious? How about i run the vocals at a live show through a pitch corrector like those puss asses. Pop sucks man, get your head out of your ass. Its more about image. When’s the last time you heard a riff come out of new radio that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand and drive you to cut school for a week so you could learn the fuckin song? Music has been going down the shitter for the last 15 years or so. Thanks a bunch MTV! Gotta love the G-G-Gee Unit.

    CousinEd

Hey man, what about Battle for Evermore???!!!?!?! Communication Breakcdown???? there’s sooooo many more to name… and don’t even get me STARTED on Iron Maiden!

Paradise city by Guns N’ Roses, ’nuff said.

  16. 16
    I_hate_idiots

Pantera sucks, always has… Dimebag sucks, even in death. Get over it.

This list is meaningless, as none of the worlds best guitarists or riffs are even on it. This is an MTV nu-metal low-pants wearing idiots guide to guitar riffs.

You people need to die. Thanks.

Fuck man that dude that said that shit about pantera riffs……LEGEND!!! pantera are the sickest band ever and yes dime is the king of riffs (r.i.p).

  18. 18

    2: These should be removed

    Iron Man - Black Sabbath
Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry
    Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix
    Heartbreaker - Led Zeppelin

    2.

    Plug In Baby - Muse
Paradise City - Guns N’ Roses

  19. 19
    Lol

I_hate_idiots should stop being such a hypocrite.

Pantera is not nu-metal, nor are any of the bands on that list, bar RATM. Oh, and you are unable to dispute Dimebag’s talent, seeing as you are a shitbag and you doing so would be an abomination to the universe.

  20. 20

  27. 27
    goat

metallica sucks. hammet is obviously homosexual but aside from that, mustaine wrote all their best songs, which DOESNT include master of puppets. i love nirvana but teen spirit is questionable. the dude who brought up STP has a good point, throw interstate into that list. and this list isnt most influential riffs, its best riffs, so get iron man out of there, its not that good. id say put in cowboys or domination by pantera. whoever made this list didnt put much thought into it, but either did half the people who responded to it, especially the fucker who badmouthed dime.

  28. 28
    lacadam

God… Poeple have diffrent ideas of what is good and what is not, do be so self centerd that everything you like is the best and thats it no one is like you…

    my mini list
willie the pimp - frank zappa
Stairway To Heaven - led zeppilin
Smels like Teenage Spirit - nirvana
Cherub Rock - the smashing pumpkins
sister ray - the velvet underground
am waiting for my man - the velvet underground
all along the whachtower - hendrix

cant think of anything else right now
but i think the best guitarist ever was Frank Zappa or hendrix but i like more Zappa

  29. 29
    braddy

    GO NIRVANA!!!!!

  30. 30
    Mc_Mutha_fuckin_PANTERA

listen goat, ur right about that faggot that was talkin about dimebag bein out of line, but, how dare u talk about metallica like that, which would you rather hear: Kill Em’ All or gay ass Metal Magic. both were released in 83′,which is the hardest? The answer of course is NOT metal magic. metallica came harcore and stayed hardcore, the pre-CFH pantera is definitely in the top 20 gayest fuckin shit ever list. for the record i fuckin love pantera(after CFH), but, metallica would stomp a fuckin mudhole in pantera’s fuckin glam-rock asses and walk that shit dry.

and hammet has had more fuckin poon tang this fuckin week than you will ever recieve

You sir are out of line

  31. 31
    Mr. Sherlock Holmes

Muse - Plug in Baby http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncO5O37fNqQ

or check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5lNAUrGJ3k for my personal favorite riff (and solo). He’s just bloody good at guitar.

  32. 32
    Amazing Forehead

uhhh wtf im pretty sure megadeth, pantera, metallica, led zeppelin and grunge bands should be the dominant particularly:
cowboys from hell, cemetery gates, live in a hole
holy wars, good mourning (and ALL megadeth)
back in black (i no its already there meh)
    leper messiah
    KASHMIR

u guys suck balls apart from the pplz that mentioned thrash metal

  33. 33
    Mc_Mutha_fuckin_PANTERA

Amazing Forehead: uhhh wtf im pretty sure megadeth, pantera, metallica, led zeppelin and grunge bands should be the dominant

thats RIGHT!!!!!!!! and i dont think that rage should be excluded just because sum think they r nu-metal. lets be honest the dude is a fukcin wizard on guitar

  34. 34
    Kirk Hammett

    Wassup bitces?!
Metallica sucks pantera’s balls and we both are gay :)

  35. 35
    James Hetfield

    YEAHHHHHHHH!!!
Lars just “came” in my mouth!!!
Heavy metal is for gay dudes,so if you’re gay, listen to heavy metal!!
    Call me ;)

  36. 36
    Hector

I am a gay guy and i listen to thrash/speed/heavy/back metal while masturbating all over my pantera/metallica/iron maiden/motorhead pictures :D

  37. 37
    Thrash TIl DEath!!!

You think people who listen to metal are gay? I wouldn’t be talkin with your pussy ass pop and emo fag shit. and metallica did come hardcore but who said they ever stayed harcore? Listen to St Anger. Does that sound even a little hardcore compared to kill ‘em all? No. It doesn’t. At least PanterA ended as good ‘ol american Metal, instead of falling into the pussy mainstream shit. Metallica KICKED ass but they don’t kick ass now. Megadeth and Pantera are a 100 times greater than pussy Alternica.

    My list:
    Cowboys from Hell by Pantera
Zombie Ritual by DEATH and alot of their early music has great riffs too! RIP Chuck Schuldiner!
    The Trooper by Iron Maiden
    Eaten by Bloodbath
    Cementary Gates by Pantera
Bonded by Blood by Exodus AWESOME RIFFS!

  38. 38
    boston pwns u

how can u put smells like teen spirit there and not even put the riff that inspired it boston’s more than a feeling? ring a bell? ive yet to see this song on any of the top riffs list and it makes me quite angry like any of u care though lol

  39. 39
    Dock Emery

    Uhm, HELLO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Has any of you ever heard of a band called TRIUMPH?
Not everyone who reads these can be oblivious to the guitar playing of Rik Emmet…… If you want a song that stands out from just the opening riffs like Smoke on the Water, Jumping Jack Flash, and Stairway to Heaven……. try listening to FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT by Triumph…… just the first six cords gets ANYONE who knows ANYTHING about 80’s music or great guitar playing in general, singing…..If you do not believe me, listen to it once, and you will see for yourself.
