I have to agree with those who made the comments on the stupidity of those who follow labels. The fact is that the bands who are more mainstream help introduce people into the black metal scene. I was into metal for a couple of years when a coworker mention CoF and I checked out some of their stuff. It got my attention then I started looking for more, I found DB, Mayhem, etc., and I still hear about more BM bands everyday.
Point is, it takes some people time to actually discover the truely raw bands that are in this particular genre. If anything, the more mainstream bands I feel ought to be credited for introducing metal fans into black metal.

HA! This is great! I grew up on metal and still enjoy some of it…even some of the more obnoxious stuff. The sad fact is, so much of it, ESPECIALLY black metal, just takes it self WAY too seriously. So many of these bands and their “satanic” followers are just so damn silly. Yeah, we get it, you got shoved into a few lockers in Jr. High. You know what? Get over it. It’s nice to see someone point out just how big of a fucking goober so many of these corpse painted, ice pick wearing, racist nerds are. Good job!

lmao. A lot of you have no clue what your talking about. People ridiculing Emperor for not being trve black metal… THEY NEVER WERE BLACK METAL FAGGOTHS!!! They do employ the use of several black metal devices though. And Emperor is one of the greatest. The reason Varg cant play shit as good as Kataklysm is because he has to play ALL the instruments. Good black metal starts with Bathory and Hellhammer, pick your way through the crap from there. Good “SYMPHONIC BLACK METAL” starts with Emperor. Someone said Deathmetal is about the music??!?!?! LMAO!!!! Most deathmetal is about how fast you can play your instrument, regardless of whether it sounds good. True, black metal is tied to an interesting style of dress, but most of you dont know what it symbolizes, represents or incapsulates so I laugh when you try to grasp it, find out you can’t, get pissed and say “black metal is for poseurs”
Really I guess what is irritating is people trying to talk about shit when they have no clue what their saying, then they go and criticize it because it’s easier than actually trying to figure it out. oh yeah and people please do some research, at least get the genres right.

Anyway, my advice would be listening to the music and keeping your ideas to youselves… Nobody on this blog gives a damn about what the others have said, people just write down some shit and are glad everyone will be able to know what they think… Wanna know what I think? I think you care more about the way that the artists look like than the way their music sounds… and in case you didn’t realise it yet… that’s fucked up. So… play the damn music… and if you really think you have something “intelligent” to say, play some more music and shut the fuck up!

if you want “technical” why don’t you listen to shred?? yeah I can play fast like yngwie, but why?? it gets boring really fast. I’d rather hear the shreaking and screaming of black metal than the sound of some guy trying to puke his guts out to death metal. black metal doesn’t need to tune their guitars down 3 notes to try and sound heavy, and their vocalists don’t sound like a grizzly bear farting.

Pfffft… Black Metal was a movement against the opressing fists of Christianity. “Black” Metal bands in those images are simply using a marketing plan ( especially COF and demon burger )
In the early 80′s before there was a Mayhem, Marduk or Emperor, a band called Mercyful Fate punched Christianity in the nuts with it’s lyrics that spoke Satanic lyrics and the denial of Jesus Christ. Not only were the lyrics well written and intelligent, but King Diamond was/is serious about Satanism, and hailed by Anton Lavey as the only true Satanic musician. Not only that, but the music was also intelligent and still stands today as some of the most well written, innovative metal ever written. While the lyrics were pissing off Christians, the music took the metal world by storm with it’s innovative, impressive musicianship based on riffing with multiple time changes, multi-octive vocals of every tone from falsetto to low growling and jazz unfluence bass and drumming.
The production was muddy and obscured. There were no videos on TV, no internet, and no radio play – but someone the band set the world on fire by word of mouth alone.
King Diamond, the inventor of the trademark BM corpse paint and image ( look it up if you don’t believe me ( the groups vocalist, recieved so much death threats that he had to wear a bullet proof vest because he feared a Christian zealot would gun him down.
Now, after Mercyful Fate came and went, the world was already used to Satanic lyrics and imagery. Black Metal is no longer a real threat to Christianity simply because Christians can ignore it, since they’ve been through all of this and seen it all before.
Hail Long live Mercyful Fate – the most black metal band the world has ever seen. The most underrated and underappreciated band that influenced and shaped metal as we knew it in the 80′s. No band has pissed off Christians like you have!
What’s my point? Black Metal is NOT a genre. Thank the 90′s assholes for turning it into one.

You forgot to mention Celtic Frost, Venom and Bathory. Although, of the mentioned bands, only Bathory played black metal as we know it today, the other two, namely Venom and Celtic Frost, had a much more powerful influence over black metal (I mean the music, not the corpse paint that KD delivered) than Mercyful Fate had. I know you’re into MF and all, but don’t distort the truth.

To be honest musically Black Metal is pretty wank. All the old school “kvlt” bands tend to strip it down to shoddy power chords, blast beats and screeching. All which take about 1 day to learn and sound the same eeeeevery bloody time! as soon as any of the bands start to incorporate symphonic influences or ANYTHING different, you get some guy going “rawwwwr they’ve ruined the music raawwwwr HAIL TRUE BLACK METAL! HAIL SATAN!
I think Satan is probably pretty bored of all this, unless he wants awful music attributed to his name

I agree with this post. Many bands you say are good have no quality in their music, and the whole production of it is crap. The bands you say suck actually try to make a good album and good production. But if guys like to listen to poorly made album, I guess that’s your opinion.
My opinion is that quality matters, even if you guys don’t care and black metal is supposed to be crap. I mean, Cradle of Filth dosen’t suck. There just not completly black metal. That I think everyone can agree on(the metal part,not the suckiness part because many people hate them.)

Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir are good in their own way, they were my stepping stone into black metal as Im sure is the case with many of us. It is obvious though that now they are mere glorified metal bands. I enjoy a bit of COF and Dimmu from time to time, but it’s mainly all Graveland, Burzum, Nokturnal Mortum, Blut Aus Nord, Peste Noire, the list goes on…
Either way it doesn’t realy matter if one does like COF or Dimmu, I do but I also accept that they are shit (utter wank) in comparrison to real black metal.
As for death metal, it is good I admit, owning a large collection myself, I will conceede that black metal pisses on death metal though…

I would just like to point out that this is the most ridiculous blog ive ever read… for the sole reason that majority of you people are flaming idiots and have the WEAKEST justifications for your argument.(i thank those of you who have decent brains) How old are you kids? 2)Sadly enough, I do have an opinion on this “bleh bleh black metal sucks because its homosexual and stupid” argument.(very educated argument huh?) I love the raw, organic, and emotional feel of black metal (well atleast the material that expresses it) I dont believe alot of people listen closely enough to really experience that “atmosphere”, so to speak, or even understand the concept of black metal as a whole. I do embrace more traditional black metal…I believe the pioneers are the artists who deserve the most respect because they created a unique sound…So im not particularly fond of anything after the mid 90s…to push it( there are plently exceptions of course…but to generalize…:) )
3)I suppose black metal has come to be a somewhat a trendy scene… when you look at people with their Dimmu Borgir t-shirts and face paint… spending mass quanities of money on ridiculous albums that have reigned over and ruined the concept completely. Im not here to critisize other bands… it just upsets me to see that this whole deal is about making cash and being the “next big thing”…and that no one really knows thats its not about “satanism” and “dani filth”. The evolution of this music has just created such a skewd image of the original concept. I just dont feel thats the way it should be. Just my opinion of course. Anyways… my main point: Black Metal… is Dead. yup.
4)I dont give a shit if it doesn’t have complex guitar solos and riffs and top notch sound quality. shut up already… Cannibal Corpse doesn’t either.

I read like half of this blog and i’m really dont understand what music does to you people. I dont give a shit about what anyone will think about my post, coz I dont give a shit about anyone here. I wont be able to see the comments to this post, coz this blog just poped up randomly and im not at my own pc to add it to favorites. The thing I dont understand is.. How can the music change your religion? I listen to all kinds of metal, but i’ve never had lust, to change my religion and to say that satan is my god. Religion is your choice, not music’s! You say you dont believe in god, b/c you listen to Black Metal? Since when is the Black Metal religion? Why would anyone want to say that “good” is bad and “bad” is good? For me, this music is insanity. And when i’m listening to it, especially Black Metal, I just feel the aggression and madness and insanity. But it does not make me relate the music to my religion. How can those christians, who believed in god, and who went to churches, say that they are not christians nomore.. Because of a Black Metal.. What the fuck is matter with you people? Just because you cant get your ass up and do something in your life, you cant just blame your religion for that. Yes, I enjoy listening to Black and Death Metal. I really do. I haven’t listened to anything else for ages already. But it will never change my religion.

Yeehaah motherphuckers.
