Snocap - Selling Music on MySpace

I like the idea of Snocap and I hope it (or something like it) catches on. Mashable’s got a good write-up on it here:

Artists on MySpace Music (or hi5, Bebo, Multiply and any other site that supports Flash embeds) can post a widget that plays the tracks and allows you to buy them right away. Indie band “The Format” is currently using the widgets on its MySpace page, where you can buy songs from their album “Dog Problems”. Tracks cost $0.79 each, which Snocap automatically charges to your Paypal account.

I checked out the widget and it’s not bad, though I found the checkbox interface confusing at first and my stomach turned at the idea of having to make an account on another service just to make a transaction under ten dollars.

What would be nice (for me) is a simple Flash widget for Paypal data transactions with no middle-man. So you can be all wandering MySpace looking for hotties in your area and then BLAM you’ve impulsed purchased my album for reasons unknown to you. If Apple was on the ball, they’d get an iTunes widget out there stat.

I was scanning a Time magazine (or Newsweek, or something) and there was an article where My Space did a very, very low-key update in June sometime where they changed the music rights. It went sort of like, “your music is ours in ways of duplication, selling, and most of its rights if you post your music up.” Just thinking of My Space and music. I don’t think that that could happen to you, because it was originally posted here, right? So they don’t have complete rights of your music.

Actually, they don’t have the rights to sell your music. Here are the key snippets:

    ———–
MySpace.com does not claim any ownership rights in the … materials (collectively, “Content”) that you post to the MySpace Services. … By displaying or publishing (”posting”) any Content on or through the MySpace Services, you hereby grant to MySpace.com a limited license to use, modify, publicly perform, publicly display, reproduce, and distribute such Content solely on and through the MySpace Services. … The license does not grant MySpace.com the right to sell your Content, nor does the license grant MySpace.com the right to distribute your Content outside of the MySpace Services.
    ——–

It also terminates as soon as you remove the music from the webpage.

And that’s all thanks to Billy Bragg of all people:

Would be nice if MySpace itself offered an option for any musician to sell downloads directly via MySpace with the lions share of the money going to the artist. If it turned out that track sales are weak overall on MySpace, then the lack of a convenient mechanism to sell tracks could not be blamed.

One site I have found that offers a far greater share of download revenue to the independent artist is http://www.mysongstore.com - The artist receives $0.74 for each song sold for $1.00.

I thought ‘here is a way to reach my enemies’ and what did I get? Just another sorry charlie hoo ha. I can’t stand it anymore.

I uploaded one of my tracks to snocap but after reviewing the terms of agreement, I deleted my myspace acount within the next hour and e-mailed snocap to end the agreement.I explained to them how I now have a great mistrust of them.I never gave my track a chance to post with them. But they state they have rights over member’s names and art and making blocks even after ending the agreement.I have fears about my very tasty .com name.My track is unregesterd and none protected but was already posted in another online store. Can they block sells there?Do I have any reason to fear snocap can now use my .com name and art? Anyone Please?
I have reason to believe that snocap has a relation with the pit of hell.I could be wrong.I need info to rest my mind.Forgive me for being so stupid.I didnt think I would havt to deal with such snake feces and distaste in the online music world.

If you need to remove your MyStore from your MySpace page, follow these steps:

    1. Login to your MySpace account, and click the “Account Settings” link.

    2. On the “Profile Settings” line, click on the “Change Settings” link.

    3. On the “Profile Settings” page, there is a check box that says “Display my Music Store on my profile”.

    Uncheck this box.

    4. Click on “Change Settings”.
