MySpace is a broken piece of junk

You know, it’s bad enough that I’m forced to use MySpace because it’s where all the people are at. Bad enough that I’m stuck replying to fan mail in their awful little inbox manager which is cluttered with ads, slow, inefficient and totally unable to search emails for later reference.

Also bad enough is that every page I go to is an all-out assault of audio visual battery, violating at least two of my senses at all times, not even including my sense of good taste. It’s bad enough that with each “connection” I make with a fan I’m entirely dependent on MySpace to contact them in the future as I have no email address for them. Not to mention that I will certainly lose and forget about them in my hundreds of friends. Who were those dudes from around here who wanted to come to my next show? Uhhh.

I also can’t import my blog there and on top of that I can’t import a gig list, so I have to maintain the one on my site at the same time. I can’t change the four songs I’ve uploaded there without breaking all the pages that people have linked them on. Blah blah blah, on and on.

So on top of ALL of that, keeping in mind it being bought for $580 million dollars: COULD IT AT LEAST STOP BEING BROKEN ALL THE TIME:

“Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred.” Man, don’t surprise me like that. I nearly fell down.

I probably see this error four times a day and I’m by no means an avid MySpacer. I just log in to approve friend requests and reply to emails now and then. WHAT IS THE DEAL.

A guy I know hacked his MySpace layout and used CSS positioning to overlay a mailto: link on top of his MySpace email button to avoid having to use their crappy “mail.”

I myself use PHP+GD to generate an image file with my gig list. I can send you the code if you like. See this page for a better example:

    http://www.myspace.com/evatree

This assumes you care enough to mess with it. Personally, I’m almost ready to kick MySpace to the curb, for a lot of the same reasons.

I like those errors on login that tell me I have to be logged in to perform the action. (The action of logging in.)

Yeah, MySpace is the worst. It’s kind of funny too, since it reaks a bunch of ‘rules’ for how a website should be designed, and yet it’s still super-popular. Rules like “work right” and “don’t make people have to hunt for navigation controls” and “have a clean and consistent aesthetic” and so on.

One of the biggest problems is that the built-in song player itself is not very reliable.

In spite of all the problems and shortcomings, it’s still a way to get exposure for free. To me, it’s worth keeping as long as it doesn’t become too time consuming.

Have you tried last.fm? It’s a bit like myspace but massively more music-oriented, and with a development team who actually fix things when you ask….

*Disclaimer: I work for them, but was a fan for two years before I started*

Scott: thanks for the offer, I may bug you for that. I went and looked for a service that provided a nice gig list widget thing and couldn’t find much. You’d think upcoming.org would have a Flash widget or something but they don’t seem to.

I’d like to kick MySpace to the curb but its social network has actually made a big difference for me. Lots of people have found out about me through there, I add local venues to my friends and they invite me to play, etc. Works way better than most things. I just wish it wasn’t totally broken.

Jonty: I’ve looked at last.fm a bunch of times and it’s cool but it always seemed more listener oriented than artist oriented. I found the artist/label page and my username’s taken so I guess I’ll see about that.

    jonty

Brad: We’re about to rewrite the entire label/artist section, you’ll see it being massively improved soon! If you have a problem (user being taken, blah), just contact our support team, they’re awesome and will help out ASAP. Tell them I sent you :)

For your benefit, here’s a technical explanation about the problems you are experiencing with Myspace:

“Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred. This error has been forwarded to MySpace’s technical group. Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred. This error has been forwarded to MySpace’s technical group. Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred. This error has been forwarded to MySpace’s technical group. Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred. This error has been forwarded to MySpace’s technical group. Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred. This error has been forwarded to MySpace’s technical group.”

Ooops, it seems an unexpected error occured while trying to explain MySpace. :)

I hate My Space, mainly because of the infamous “My Space pictures”. You know, where people pull their hair over their eyes, doll themselves up, and take 500 of the same picture and put it up on My Space. All that for no one to see. Here’s my Xanga blog that I update every eternity http://www.xanga.com/Pig_McMunchers. Don’t comment though, I’ll never be there.

i had a terrible day. thank you for making me laugh.

    MySpaceSucks

Funny, I just went there to approve/deny some friends (and check out new pics of friends), and it gave me this error message about 2/3 of the time that I clicked a link. I then googled the phrase, and your blog came up.

I think myspace is going to crash hard in the coming months, but that’s just my opinion. I wish a working site would have become popular instead of this POS.

  12. 12
    Dylan

Maybe, just maybe, My Space is crashing from a user-overload. Almost everyone I know that isn’t one of my friends (because we all hate My Space) has a My Space account, so it could be that Tom just needs to get more memory.

  13. 13
    Josh

I just googled this phrase trying to look up why myspace was being such a fucking piece of shit!
I tried to log on and check my important messages, and if Tom needs more memory then fucker buy more memory. Or computers or anything fuck you got 580 million

  14. 14
    ChunkyBhutt

You trying to tell me 500millionbillion dollars cant buy a couple of new qcore servers?? WTF?

  15. 15
    Kieran

Dammit, I just can’t friggin login. All the time it says unexpected error!! yadayadayada… It’s getting on my nerves now! Myspace is kinda crap but bebo is to laugh at :P

  16. 16
    Jade

ahhh i hate myspace everyonez got it nd no one can see mine coz its on some stupid private thing nd when i go to log in dat poxy message comes up “Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred.” i feel like ripping my hair out!!!

MySpace is an absolute terrible peice of crap for a website. I can get my 1 year to design something more functional in Frontpage. Whats really bad is that fact I dont use it to much, but the one day my wife and I need it, it will not let us in. We have a friend coming in(who we got back in touch via MySpace) and now we have no clue if she will be here, BECAUSE I CANT GET TO MY DAMN INBOX!!!

I have these errors ever sine i joined myspace. Geez, whats the problem.

  18. 18
    fluffy

Although MySpace is a piece of crap, I have a hard time believing you could implement it in FrontPage. It actually does a lot more than serve up a static page.

But yeah, it’s reimplementing email the wrong way around.

    JY

If you have MySpace set up so that comments need to be approved by you, MySpace can sometimes lose a comment. Twice, when I logged in to approve of a comment after having been notified by email about it (without the email saying what the comment was), I found myspace had failed to deliver the actual comment approval message to my inbox.

    How do websites “break” anyway?

occasionally tom will sent out a bulliten thing and its something like “oh sorry lol the ____ is busted, working on a fix! lololol”

  21. 21
    yup

Why does myspace suck so bad. I will kick you in the balls, myspace. WHY CAN I NOT POST A COMMENT IN ANY GROUPS ANYMORE. You piece of shit. I spit on you.

  22. 22
    well

I have no idea what myspace is for.
Although with all the hype i felt like i needed a myspace. So i have one, I dont know WTF i am supposed to do now.

  23. 23
    kav

same here: Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred.

This error has been forwarded to MySpace’s technical group.

but it works on other computers!
so it must be something to do with our side, no?

  24. 24
    veruca assault

my gawd, I typed in “Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred” and found this page. Obviously I’m glad I’m not the only person suffering but for THE SAKE OF CHER, I’ve been trying to log on for ages now and all I’m getting are these frigging messages. I got my pal to check his myspace and his is fine, it’s just my myspace that is a myspazz and it’s doing my nut in. I love myspace because so many people use it. That is the only reason why. I wish every person on myspace actually used a site that worked! The more I use it the more bugs I find.

And why is this happening more and more? Is it a server issue? Overload by any chance? I’ve got friends whose myspaces have disappeared off the face of the planet, I’m just waiting for it to happen to me. Only thing is, I’ve had it for two years and thats a hell o a lot of correspondence to loose. You’d think if it was worth so much money they might actually spend some trying to make it user friendly?

  25. 25
    Megatron

I agree fully, I’ve only been on today for two minutes and I’ve lost count of the number of Error messages I’ve seen. I was trying to see if anyone’s read my blog yet, and I can’t even do that. Bloody stupid thing.

  26. 26
    Tom

hahahaha…you guy are FUCKIN sad…you guy talk alot of SHIT, but once MySpace is fix…you be on it…to all of you BITCHCH and to you Brad stop your FUCKIN CRYING!!!

    life suck. enjoy it.

    Tom

    Kaci

I’m having the same freaking problem.
I can log into my brothers account,
but for some reason, when I log into mine,
and then i click on “view profile”,
the “sorry! an unexpected error has occurred”
It’s been doing this for the past 3 hours!
GRRR! I’m so sick of myspace!!!!

  28. 28
    jon

what everyone’s failed to mention here is whether myspace really does have a “technical group” or not.

Or, while the message “has been forwarded”, they actually read yours or not, given the frequency of the errors.

I’m done with myspace, this stupid error is now expected, and if the query actually goes through…that’s unexpected now. I found a social networking site that seriously rocks, it’s the best one out there. It’s called Zoints and you can find it at http://zoints.com. My zoints profile is located at http://keep-music-alive.zoints.com, come by and say hi. :)

Zoints rocks because everything is easy to modify, the coding is solid, and it has 10x more features than any other place. And it ties in with cool forums where you can meet even more people and get to know them. Check it out if you haven’t already!

    Kris

try changing your email address on myspace, I have been trying to for the last 3 months, I have wrote them messages complaining about the error, and still nothing. Says its sending a confirmation email, never does, so I cancel the change, start over, same crap, different day.. what a buggy piece of junk.

  31. 31
    madra

even better than the “unexpected error…” message is the one i get roughly four times out of five, when i try to access my myspace page directly via my myspace URL, which tells me my account either doesn’t exist, or has been deleted.

myspace is the most unbelievable POS website it’s ever been my misfortune to have to deal with. unfortunately tho’ - as you say - it seems the entire population of the western world has an account, so it’s almost compulsory to have some kind of presence there.

  32. 32
    G4m3rM4tt

Oh the “unexpected error..” message is nice but what about when your trying to log in and it says “I’m sorry this account is undergoing routine maintenance” WTF is that supposed to be? Some dickwad that works for myspace reading my messages. WTF myspace WTF…..

  33. 33

Hey I had that myspace error as well and couldn’t sign.
Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred.

This error has been forwarded to MySpace’s technical group.

I went to tools on my explorer then deleted cookies and temporary files and cleared the history and then signed in and it worked. Not sure if this is the reason why but sure worth a try.

    Cheers Y’all

dude. chillax. fuck man, if you’re so concerned, dont use it, so it cooks out a couple times. 5 minutes of your life doesnt fuckin matter. its not going to affect the outcome of your life

like everyone else, i found this site when searching for the error message. this prompted me to check and see if http://myspaceisgay.com/ was taken. it is, and it’s pretty funny. if you hate myspace, you should get a kick out it.

  38. 38
    jo

mmm… the error message has happened to me all to often… and all i have done i wait and it finally works…. it didn’t used to happen untill i got the UK version of myspace… maybe summins wrong with it :S

    will

    SAME!

I spent AGES trying to find my friend on here, I finally find her and I actually can’t view her page. Every time I go to click the link it comes up with that page. Ive restarted my pc, changed browsers, turned off firewalls etc - IT’S JUST A PIECE OF SHIT

  40. 40
    mikeburtner

I am going to send snotty e-mails to the so-called technical group every 5 minutes today. In some, I will go on about the complete shoddiness of myspace, and how I only use it because my daughter and 40 kajillion other idiots rely on it. In others, I will go on about getting tics out of my dog’s ear, or my recipe for snicker doodles.

They waste my time with every third click on myspace.com. Why shouldn’t I waste theirs?

The code is not just kludgy or obtuse: it’s frakking BROKEN! I just hope that the Gmail team and the Myspace folks are separated by buildings, firewalls and, ideally, about 26 US States.

    Single Girl

I am so annoyed with it too. It is nice to see people who feel your pain. It I see “Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred” one more time… I will scream!!! How in the hell did it get so popular with so many problems?!? Just goes to show… most people are “followers”…

  42. 42
    Darren

i had this message appear (several times) - after hitting the back button and trying again a few minutes later it works, if there was a genuine error this would not happen - why not just say “server busy” and spare us the pathetic excuses?

  43. 43
    Butch

Good to see it’s not just me… I set the damn thing up, because the guys in my band suggested it. It seems like half the time I’ve tried to invite people out to a show, I get the “Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred.
This error has been forwarded to MySpace’s technical group. ” Two months later, and I’m still sending it by email.

  44. 44
    rheydine

everytime i logg in it says an error occured and will be sent to the myspace technical group please fix it

    david

hey.. i read this along with laughing at some of the comments.. This at least works for me at times..i have firefox 2.0, and i keep getting that message about error alot of times, usually when i need it the most..anyway i got real mad one night but i noticed my error messages kept appearing after i had been on myspace a few times during the day or when my computer began to slow down.. Anyway I cleared my private data using Firefox, such as cookies, cache and other junk as well.. After I did that it seems the error messages went away most of the time until my computer slows down again or i have been on myspace for sometime that day.. I just got the error message awhile ago then i searched to see what it actually meant and i then cleared my data and it works now.. ???? i dont know if that will help anyone..Maybe you should try the disk cleanup thing or restarting your computer…

  46. 46
    Mark Taormino

They don’t they even “address” the spam issues? Or any real issues at MySpace… That’s why I created this new site called UpCrowd.com. It’s better than MySpace because you can make multiple pages along with your profiles…

  47. 47
    leialoha

why is it that myspace isnt working??
can you pls.fix it like now and the online now
    doesnt show
