Got a show tonight, so yesterday I thought “hey, why not use MySpace to send out invitations to people who are in the area?” Man, what a good use for a social network, I think to myself.
I head over and create an event and it manages not to break. Then I search for MySpace friends that are in Ottawa to invite and the search totally doesn’t work. It just returns nothing every time and that’s just completely incorrect.
Anyway I was so angry and it was too early to kill the pain with alcohol so I wrote a script to grab all the URLs of my 900+ friends and then search their profiles for the word “Ottawa”. Better than nothing. God I hate MySpace so much.

I was doing some googling for my own profile and came across this: http://www.mikeindustries.com/blog/archive/2006/04/hacking-myspace-layouts
and used it for this:

Hey Brad, have you had a look at “Windows Live Spaces”?
Seems to be a little bit cleaner/sleeker.

There seem to be tons of great alternatives but unfortunately I’m kind of stuck going wherever the masses go if I want it to do much for me.

Luckily for you, I just finished implementing myspace 2.0 from the ground up. All the major myspace functionality is there. Check it out :-P -> http://myspace.techtoucian.net/
Okay, I was feeling snarky.

Even if they work the bugs out….wondering what percentage of the millions of bands on MySpace can realistically expect to sell enough downloads to write home about?

By the way MySpace has been acting up a lot lately with regard to errors. I recently uploaded a new song and it won’t play (just says “connecting, and I tried deleting and reploading a couple times). When emailing customer service, they email me back boilerplate responses even though I’m describing the problem pretty specifically. I’m making a 3rd attempt to at least get them to understand the problem. (They first assumed I did not know how to upload a song and sent a boilerplate response about uploading a song, and next they assumed that the problem was that the song was merely waiting to be processed after uploading which also isn’t true)

Myspace is a hack-and-slash created site that got a little too big for it’s britches.
Problems with songs not playing, sporatic errors and other time-delayed evils are due to a) not error-checking the mp3’s in flash for latency and b) poorly constructed, poorly maintained database
I’m just waiting for google to buy (read: fix) it. Hopefully, they’ll start working on improving the search functionality soon.
