Comment moderation

Whoah, I just happened into my Wordpress comment moderation queue and there were 500 and some messages in there, 60 of which were legit. I’ve now approved them, but that’s lame. My apologies to anyone I lazily silenced. Bad Wordpress!

Better than 10% signal to noise isn’t bad, although sifting though all that spam to find the good ones is a pain. I recently got fed up with the level of spam I was having to moderate (see http://jclark.org/weblog/2006/10/22/the-other-canned-meat/), and a couple commenters suggested the Akismet plugin for Wordpress, which comes with Wordpress.

Akismet prefilters your comments, so you only have to moderate the ones it thinks are okay. You still have the option of scanning the spam bin, if you like, before permanently removing it. In a couple weeks’ time it’s caught over 500 spams for me. You’ll still need to moderate (unless you turn that off, though I wouldn’t), but it’s a lot faster and less painful with Akismet installed.

I did, but the old server was crashing and I suspected Bad Behavior was aggravating it. Akismet I’ve been running since Wordpress 2 came out. It’s great, though for some reason Wordpress 2 decided to stop informing me of new comments in need of moderation. Anyway, seems to be back to normal — Officemax and Sweden sucks comments are getting approved regularly now.
