Better than 10% signal to noise isn’t bad, although sifting though all that spam to find the good ones is a pain. I recently got fed up with the level of spam I was having to moderate (see http://jclark.org/weblog/2006/10/22/the-other-canned-meat/), and a couple commenters suggested the Akismet plugin for WordPress, which comes with WordPress.

Akismet prefilters your comments, so you only have to moderate the ones it thinks are okay. You still have the option of scanning the spam bin, if you like, before permanently removing it. In a couple weeks’ time it’s caught over 500 spams for me. You’ll still need to moderate (unless you turn that off, though I wouldn’t), but it’s a lot faster and less painful with Akismet installed.
