Free software I’ve been happy with

MediaMonkey - A while back I mentioned I was searching for a new music player, something that would let me shuffle through my library nicely. I tried nearly everything out there and 95% of it was awful. Media Monkey is awesome. Less bloated than iTunes, more feature-rich than Winamp, MediaMonkey has it all. I went from being bored with my massive music library to being entertained again.

Media Player Classic - Make no mistake, VLC should still be installed on every system. But Media Player Classic is a little bit more attractive and faster for jumping through certain video files.

RocketDock - This is a sexy lightweight little program launcher. I always used the built-in sidebars in XP but this is sexier.

Notepad++ - My favorite programming editor. I keep finding new features in it that make my life easier.

Pidgin - I replaced Trillian with this after being horrified by how bulky Trillian Astra looks. I still like the simplicity of Google Talk but this is cool for all the other protocols.

Cool picks, thanks. Does the Notepadd++ work with HTML/CSS as well? (Probably a stupid question)

It’s got highlighting and so on for HTML/CSS but it doesn’t have like a Dreamweaver/Homesite style HTML/CSS editor.

For those of you who use multiple computers at times, I’d have to add Synergy — http://synergy2.sf.net

Oh, yah, I’ve been liking RocketDock. I even moved the start menu up to the top of the screen. My PC is all Macified.

Cool, I didn’t know about mediamonkey.

Another few I love are Process Explorer, Autoruns, and the Vista theme for XP (at your own risk, it’s a shady looking install but it works fine for me - google “vista transformation pack 6 final”)

I think you’re the only person I’ve seen who, like me, uses Media Monkey. I really like it, although I’m sure I don’t use all its capabilities. My only complaint about it is that it seems to take a bit longer to get up and running when clicked than do some other similar softwares when I run it at home. But it sure is a flexible bit of free fun.

I’ve got to go with Miranda over Pidgin. GAIM has always been too unstable for me, and Miranda’s a little lighter on the resources.

I like Winamp if I just want to listen to a couple songs. Otherwise I use Media Player.
