Classic Album sales

This CNN article goes over the recent sales of a lot of older/classic albums which is pretty interesting. Here are the sales numbers they mention for 2006:

Back in Black (AC/DC) 440,000
Cross Road (Bon Jovi) 324,000
Christmas Eve and Other Stories (The Trans-Siberian Orchestra) 289,000
Metallica (Metallica) 275,000
Number Ones (Michael Jackson) 162,000
Nevermind (Nirvana) 143,000
Appetite for Destruction (Guns N’ Roses) 113,000
OK Computer (Radiohead) 94,000
The Soft Bulletin (The Flaming Lips) 38,000
Paul’s Boutique (Beastie Boys) 22,000
It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (Public Enemy) 15,000
Millennium (The Backstreet Boys) 9,000
Mariah Carey (Mariah Carey) 5,000
1982 (Asia) 5,000

My conclusion from this data: Back in Black is a very popular album.

What a counterintuitive, controversial conclusion. I’m glad to see Paul’s Boutique and The Soft Bulletin still selling copies.

Also — tv commercials can really help music.

It was either Gap or Express (?) that had the “Back In Black” commercial running for months for their line of black clothing…it looks like that didn’t hurt sales too much.

While OK Computer is a pretty amazing album, I don’t know if I’d call it older/classic.

OK Computer is ten years old this summer. That’s fairly old by music standards.

Also, Back in Black is the theme for Lewis Black’s segment on the Daily Show (called Back in Black).

    No, it’s a shitty soundalike.

As far as I know AC/DC does not allow sampling or licensing. Which I guess they can afford if they’ve been selling 400,000+ records since the 70s.

I would be very interested in knowing how digital downloads have been for these wondrous dinosaurs. I’d think that “Dirty Deed (done dirt cheap)” might bring AC/DC more downloads than any of their albums, but I’d like to see the data to assess whether my guess is worthy.
