Hey hey. I need some background vocals for the title track of my next album (Out of It). I kinda want it to have a singalong vibe. Instead of just going to some of my singing buddies I thought it’d be fun to try opening it up to anyone out there.
So here’s the unfinished song with rough vocals:
How to play along at home:
1. Record yourself singing along with this song as best you can. It doesn’t have to be the greatest quality, but try to keep clipping/distortion & mic pops to a minimum. Note: I need a recording of only your singing to be able to mix you in.
2. Upload your audio files to ccMixter.org under an Attribution Creative Commons license (which gives anyone permission to use your vocals as long as they give you credit). Please tag the file with “outofit”. Update: ccMixter has a submit form specifically for this. If you’re logged in, go here.
Deadline: Monday, October 15th Sunday, November 11th.
What’s in it for you: If I use your vocals I’ll credit you in the liner notes for the song and ship you out a free copy of the record when it’s done. Woo!
Thank you! (You can see the submissions so far here.)
Update: fieryprophet has mixed all the vocals as of October 16th, check it out [5mb mp3].

Do you just want straight vocals or any attempts at harmonies too?

You’re welcome to do whatever you like. I plan to take the submissions and see what works.

Awesome — funny, I’m hoping to do something very similar in 1-2 months, but just for the exit chorus of a new song. Anyway, I’m in, hopefully. Fun song, Brad!

I did something similar to this a couple of years ago.
Alas, mine turned out horribly. Better luck on yours!

Cool song, Brad. But I think you should post a non-vocal version to allow for more individual interpretation when singing along. Easier for the singer, ultimately.

I’m not sure how usable background vox will be if the timing varies too much from mine, I’m interested to try. But here you go:

I like the song Brad. I knocked out some harmonizing vocals. Now to figure out where exactly to send it, lol.

Ah… I just reread your original post and see that you were looking for backing vox! My mistake. Thought you wanted a whole new lead.

I’ve uploaded my attempt to ccMixter, but *ahem* it’s rather rough :) I would have put it through some cleaning up, but I didn’t know if you had your own mixing process so I figured I let you do your magic instead. If it’s not clean enough, drop me an email and I’ll try a better take.

Hi there,
The link to the track is coming back as unavailable.
Would love to listen to it and give it a shot at backing vocals.
Love your music!

OK… chalk one more up to Vista. I had tried earlier with my laptop and failed but the main computer at home, running XP, had no problems. Sorry for the needless worry!

I just submitted my version under BLT. I hope I tagged it right. Let me know if you got it, Brad. After listening, I noticed I dropped to a weird key on the “own” word every damn time, but I didn’t hear it when I was recording. Easy fix if this is what you’re looking for. I’m not a great singer, but I love making music ;)

Hey Brad! I’m sitting down to tackle this… thanks for posting the instrumental only track — that will help — but would it be too much of a pain to also post your “vox only” track too? That would make things easier for me, anyway!
Anyhoo, this is a cool idea. I hope it turns out well!

Also!
Do you happen to have a preference for the file type that gets uploaded? I was planning on zipping .wavs… but I’m happy to compress to .mp3s if that’s what you’d like.
Brad on Out of It community backup vocals

Anti-m: WAVs or MP3s are fine. Higher quality the better obviously, but whatever sounds good to your ear.
Do you still need my vocals?

October 16, 2007 at 5:58 pm
ouija reapairman: Did I say good? I’ll take any!
liam: Sounds fine to me. Keep in mind that my idea is to mix a bunch together to get a crowd sound so the individual singing perfection doesn’t matter much.

I’m going to join in. Do you mind vocal manipulations? Lately, I’ve been doing lots of zombie-noise-rock, so I’ve been recording at a full octave lower than my normal voice.
Anti-m on Out of It community backup vocals
October 16, 2007 at 11:03 pm
Ok — I’ve got two mono mp3s up there for your use. The levels might be low-ish, but I imagine you can remedy that. For some reason the site wouldn’t let me upload zipped .wavs (despite claiming that such were acceptable?) If you need the .wavs, let me know and I’ll post ‘em somewhere else for you to grab.

Hey, Brad.
The phrasing you’ve chosen for this song is very abnormal; making it difficult to submit/suggest new phrasing.
Do you have a bed-track only?

Hi Tolwyn, instrumental is here:

What’s abnormal about the phrasing? (Just wondering.)

Okay. Finally got mine up and posted. Tried to get it as clean as possible.
Probably won’t matter if a few people have some hiss and noise, but if there’s too many I’d think the noise would accumulate.
Anyway, hope that works for ya’

I’ll get a recording done when I can, just a side idea, what if you also got those doing songs to webcam a clip or something. Would make an easy automatic music video with some time spent editing.

I posted this on the regular boards too because I forgot where this topic was.
This is what I put down for an explanation -
Added lyrics at the end are Tracy Chapman’s. I thought the dichotomy between Brad’s “i’ve got no time to make you believe me†and Tracy’s “You’ve gotta make me change my mind†was too tempting to resist.
And just to let you all know my delusions are no longer suffering in a state of grandeur. Thank you very much Brad. lol
I hope it’s O.K. to have those added lyrics at the end, because they do belong to someone else. Maybe they could just be real quiet? If not maybe you could just cut that part out. Sorry if it adds work to it.

Hey–
The final sounds. Though the track that fieryprophet mixed — just a capella — sounds freaking awesome. Any chance someone could do an updated a capella mix with more voices?
Hmm… that’d be a cool thing to put on a bonus CD…
