I don’t normally listen to podcasts, but on this last bit of travel I tried out a bunch that were suggested to me via Twitter. Here are some reviews:
This is a great science radio show but I’m not sure it was engaging enough to focus on completely. It put me to sleep several times on the airplane which was nice of it.
I like a lot of Bill Maher’s stuff even though he’s the whitest man in the world. This podcast is just the audio from his HBO TV show, which seemed like itd’d be all right, but the crowd cheers and laughter were so loud compared to the speaking I had to keep dialing the volume up and down to keep it from blowing my ears out. I gave up part way through the first episode. Next time I may run them through a compressor first.
I wasn’t sure I’d like this hyper-literate ultra-nerdy sorta hipster comedy talk-show, but it worked for me and I wish I’d brought more.
The Ongoing History of New Music
I was excited to see this show on iTunes as I love it and looked forward to catching up, but it only feeds one minute previews! What the hell!

If you want a science radio show that is really engaging – to the point of putting Q&Q to shame – check out WYNC’s Radio Lab.

As a music guy I’m sure you know way more about this than me, but I’ve found the Levelator is a great free and automatic compressor for volume-erratic podcasts:

I’m not sure if it can take an MP3 directly though – I feed it our WAV before encoding and uploading.

Another vote for Radio Lab. Some of the older podcasts about memory, sound, pitch recognition, are just incredible.

“Mac Break Weekly”! If have are into Apple stuff at all this is a great audio podcast. Merlin Mann from “You Look Nice Today” is a co-host sometimes.
“Play Value” = best video podcast ever.
“Ricky Gervais” = hilarious
“60 minutes” = audio version of their TV show…great if you like the TV show
“Diggnation” = great video podcast that’s based around the top stories on Digg.

WOOT radio lab! I wish they produced more frequently!
Also “this american life”, which isn’t a fraction as douchey as it sounds, and “mothpodcast”.
Assuming you’re following hotdogsladies on twitter? I think it’s the guy from you look nice today– super funny dude.

I’m not sure – but maybe you would like chaosradio (international):

If you understand german, I would recomment chaosradio express:
http://chaosradio.ccc.de/chaosradio_express.html
Both are made by the amazing Tim Pritlove (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Pritlove)

I’ll have to check out radio lab. Must be good.
- CDBaby DIY Podcast – good stuff!
- Dave Ramsey – (financial stuff) – The people that call in remind me to stay wayyy out of debt. I don’t always agree with him 100% but I like how he tells it like it is.
- This American Life — just like the previous poster said about it not being douchey… it’s full of thought-provoking goodness. 9/10 shows are flat out excellent. They touch on a lot of different types of people too, it’s not always typical “American” stuff.

I listen to podcasts all the time. The kind of podcasts that I stick with are informational, educational podcasts. It really depends what is your field of interest (mine is mostly history), but whatever it is, there is lots to find. There are a couple of blogs out there where you can find them:
