terminal I tried doing a podcast a few years ago and failed. I just wanted to share some music I was into but compiling the podcasts was time-consuming enough that it got pushed aside almost immediately.

So I’ve started another podcast on Sellout Central which I’m planning to put out every Monday.

This time though I’ve spent some of my vacation time figuring out how to automate most of the process.

The nerdy details:

Using sox, flite, lame and a bash script, all I have to do is export a playlist from Foobar2000 and run a script. Sox crossfades the songs and compiles them into one big WAV file, flite generates the speech synthesis for the intros and outros and then lame compresses them into an MP3 with appropriate ID3 tags. So basically, I export the WAVs and then run:

./podcastit.sh [episode #] [# of songs]

And get back a shiny podcastable MP3. Whether anyone will like the songs I like is a whole different matter.

If you want the script, let me know and I can package it up.

Update: and here is the script all packaged up.

Great mixes!

2 little feedbacks .. It would be nice if you could publish the start times next to each song so if you are tabbing back and forth between work and the songs, you can figure out which track is playing .. and not sure if the wordpress player handles it, but if you change volume in one playback widget, it would be nice if a cookie remembered the level for other playbacks (a common issue with media sites).

Good luck with your podcasts!

I´m in a bit of a hurry, the film needs to be done at thursday morning and I really need to know if it´s ok or not.

Please let me know cause I would love to use it. It´s a marvelous song and it´s perfect for the film.

Dude, excellent automation extravaganza. Can I have the script? :-)

Mattias, you’ll be fine as long as you’re not selling that assignment. As far as I know Brad’s music is generally under a Creative Commons non-commercial share-alike license (in other words: do what you want with it, but if you want to sell it you need to talk to Brad first).

Just typical. I spend weeks writing the podcast generation script for CCHits.net, come here to find some music, and find YOU ALREADY DID IT! Grr :D.

Oh well, at least we can share any code improvements? :)

My code is all available at http://gitorious.net/cchits-net
