I spent the last day or so playing around with the equipment in my room to try and see how well I’d be able to replicate the sound of another song (“Just” by Radiohead). I’m a major newbie when it comes to recording/mixing and this is definitely the most ambitious project I’ve attempted. I did it sort of as an exercise to better familiarize myself with the equipment and how to record/mix, so if anybody has any recommendations/tips for me then please share. I played all the instruments EXCEPT for the drums (A MIDI that I “borrowed” from someone else) A few problems I encountered were: I’ve uploaded two versions of the song (one without vocals) so that analyzing the instruments will be a little easier. INSTRUMENTAL WITH VOCALS and… the original recording (by Radiohead) Thanks for the help!! |

it sounded pretty good to me for what you did and had but yeah, i still have trouble with Compressing vocals because i use reaper to record vocals but the only compressor i have is on FL Studio which is way to hard to record vocals on…just to confusing |

Yeah I’m actually going to redo it and be more meticulous with each take to make sure all the effects/settings are maximized BEFORE going onto the mixing stage. Still though, I really need to learn how to properly use an equalizer and a compressor one of these days. Hopefully the next take will be a bit of an improvement, then I’ll start fussing about post-production at that point. |

So after a few days of fighting with Sony Acid, I redid the song completely. This version doesn’t have vocals yet, but I think it’s much better… http://soundcloud.com/ernzoa/just-radiohead-cover-instrumental |

grow- if you use ASIO drivers, recording vocals in FLstudio is easy! I use a Delta 4/4 to record vocals. You can listen to your wet signal in your headphones while saving the dry to disk. It’s great! |
