OK, so I’m a guitarist/singer and — surprise, surprise — I need a drummer. After years of unsuccessful searching, I’ve just about had it, and I’m willing to give software a try. Now, I’m not experienced with this so please (pretty please?) bear with me, but my question is: is Ableton Live sufficient enough to replace a flesh-and-blood drummer?

Ultimately, this is what I really want to do: perform as a full band by myself. But what I want to avoid is something akin to pressing “Play” (such as the drum tracks) and have my guitar/vocals fill in the rest.

So,

(A) is Ableton Live sufficient to replace a drummer? And,
(B) will Ableton allow me to play/record drum instruments on-the-fly, establish them as loops, then have my guitar/vocals fill in the rest?

I’m going through some tutorials right now…I just wanted to know if I am wasting my time.

Thanks,
George

Live can do this, it shouldn’t be very hard. What you’re looking for is something similar to the Kid Beyond technique:

But instead of using your mouth to make the loops you can tap them in or play them with whatever percussion you have around.

The one restriction seems to be (from my brief investigation) is that you have to pre-set the length of the loops. For instance you can’t suddenly decide you want your drum loops to be 6 bars instead of 4, you need to set that up in advance.
