I’m in a band and basically we really need a band name for promotion and gigs and stuff.
Considering how important it is, I’ve decided to enlist the help of strangers on the internet.
I guess our shared like of Brad Sucks must mean you guys probably have at least a reasonably sound taste.

Person who comes up with the best name wins the incredible prize of naming my band.

I guess it matters why you wanna change the name in the first place or is this not about dirty scarlet?

First of all Dirty Scarlet just seems to have emo connatations that I’m not so keen on. Also, it just doesn’t have the elements of wit and interestingness i think band names should have.

Second of all, this band is a Dirty Scarlet reincarnation. We kicked out the lead singer because of musical and personal issues (that are frankly, unbeleivable) and the rhythm guitarist has taken up lead vox and we have a different, less generic sound.

We’re doing pretty good without her and people are saying we are much, much better now.

Buttttttttttttt we need a name…

What kind of music?

In a Spanish review of one of my albums someone used the term “disco redondo”. Google translates it to “round disc” which I thought was pretty rad.

I’m not 100% sure genre wise.
I guess we are under that big ol’ rock ubrella, but very few arn’t.
I guess kinda chilled out indieish thing that’s sometimes a bit dancable and sometimes a bit folky.

But still a good name is a good name.

Josaphine’s Flying Machine and Disco Redondo seem good.
Variant Emissions just seem a bit too green-house-effectish and global-warmingy

hmmm…
We seem to be moving back into Dirty Scarlet-esque territory now.

But c’monnnnnn people.
Btw, if the band name is a reference to something, tell me what it is.
References to things are cool, lets try that angle.
Or the random words angle.
Or the clever angle.
Or the funny angle.

Just keep your eyes on the prize people.

dude, a band name is in most cases…personal to the artist in some way, i.e. Brad Sucks. what is personal to you guys? what do you stand for? what describes or applies to you? what’ll make the listener say, what the hell does that mean? The coolest band names mean something, and the coolest bands make a stupid name sound cool…Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd…whats the story behind those? Find it, name it and make it yours.

But it goes the other way around too
I’m attracted to bands by their name quite easily
I may never have never listened to Brad Sucks if i wasn’t punched in the face by the fist full of self-satire that is his name.
Other such examples of band names that made me listen:

The Whitest Boy Alive
We Are Scientists
The Victorian English Gentlemens Club
Ratatat
The Queers
Pixies
Major Organ and the Adding Machine
The Last Shadow Puppets
Echo & The Bunnymen
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone
Architecture in Helsinki

and many more…

I don’t even like some of those bands, but their names made me think they’d be pretty interesting, so i gave them a chance.

So, yeah

I think most band names that sound good to the ear are usually made of two words, because that’s catchy I guess.
Also I just had a vision and it said that your band should be named Poop Flies. This means that eather the band are the flies and the fans the poop, like, where the fans are (in what scene) the band goes to play, or simply because poop is flying. And finally you couldn’t possibly say that Poop Flies doesn’t sound catchy.

Btw I guess dp is very right about what he wrote in his last post.

“I may never have never listened to Brad Sucks if i wasn’t punched in the face by the fist full of self-satire that is his name.”

exactly, that why i said that. thats probably why he used it. but is it satire? does brad suck? does brad “suck”? does brad think he sucks? do u think he sucks? its a question to the listener…”do i suck? if i suck, well i already told u i suck, so if u say i suck, well then it doesnt matter.” FOR THE RECORD BRAD I THINK WE ALL AGREE BRAD MOST CERTAINLY DOES NOT SUCK. And when someone finds brad and realizes, hey…he doesnt suck…its priceless for everyone. The name Brad Sucks is a window, rather a preview of what to expect inside once you get there. is it possible “The Last Shadow Puppets” doesnt mean anything? why those words? What vision does it create? how does it flow? can it be abbreviated? and nowadays… what do the search results look like in google? is the domain available? how unique are the keywords?

Poop Flies is actually really excellent, catchy name but probably not for the genre. lol :)
