Hey everyone, with so many damn fans out there, we really need to get Brad played on our local radio stations. I’ve noticed it’s not that hard to get someone played on the smaller local radio stations. I’ve gotten Brad played here in Champaign IL (Home to University of Illinois) a few times already and am looking to get him on the music list at some of the local clubs and bars.

It’s clear that this is a grassroots effort… so lets act like, who here thinks you can get brad played on your local station?

That’d be sweet. Is there anything I could do to help?

I’d really like to try getting the new record played on the radio somehow but I kinda lack the resources to bomb all the stations with my marketing material. That also usually feels like a waste of time. Much better to get real requests going on.

Put together a marketing pack, make it downloadable online, and have “representatives” send it to their local radio stations. I’m talking ISO images and PDFs here.

I don’t know how good if an idea that is, but I’m very tired and that’s just what popped up.

I’d say you got tons of Fans and you should put them to work. You should appoint a coordinator to do it, somebody really really motivated and potentially willing to work hard for pittance. Have that person coordinate fan-based grassroots movement on spreading the word.

Trust me, some of your fans like me have good connections to awesome marketing outlets. For instance, I’m in the game industry and know lots of creative outlets your music would fit really well into (game trailers, creative marketing firm’s clients advertising videos, etc.) and if a coordinator was willing to tell me what to do, I would do it.

I’d suggest Brad, maybe any of the cash you raise for investing into the music in the near future should go into a little bit of pay for this person.

Anyone willing to maybe step up to the plate on this one?

A coordinator sounds like a decent idea, though I’m not sure anyone would be up for it. That’d be sweet though. This “cash” you mention sounds intriguing also. I have a super small budget, though I’m considering sinking more of my vast, vast savings into promoting this record so I’m certainly open to ideas.

I’ve got a (slightly old) press kit here. I’ll be updating that when the new record comes out.

I’m also mixed on how much being on the radio is worth. Does anyone listen to that anymore? Maybe I’m out of touch. I thought about pressing up 500 CDs (sans packaging) and firing them off to college radio, but it seemed like a waste of a thousand dollars. Half the college kids who would actually play me probably drag their iPods or laptops into the studio and hook that up.

What I’ll really need help with on the new record is letting podcasts and music blogs know it’s available. I have a bit of a media contact list but I’m usually too polite to hassle anyone I don’t know.

Love the sarcasm,

Yeah, you bring up an interesting question of “How does an artist get popular these days” and “what type of popularity do you want”. I think people still do listen to the radio, there are a lot of technologically retarted people out there.

However, I think what the main goal isn’t really radio play, it’s name recognition, and when you don’t have a big label backing you that goal is something you need to take some creativity to to do correctly (which you’ve done a pretty good job of already, but as you’ve seen, it takes a while).

I think we may be able to find a coordinator, it’s something you and the really really dedicated fan-base should look for, but it might not work out. However, the fact still stands, you should make use of fan power. If you’ve ever heard of the band 30 seconds to mars, they have something called the “Echelon” which is the dedicated fan-base which takes it upon themselves to perform band-tasked “missions” for them. In other words, through a clever ploy, they get lots of free work.

You should certainly do something like that to mobilize your fanbase to promote for you.

I’d be willing to dedicate some time to both brainstorm and execute such a fan-oriented marketing strategy over the forums here if you’re interested.

Well, it’s always been a dream of mine to have a legion of minions doing my bidding. I guess I just haven’t been overwhelmed with email from people asking to do things to help.

Not that I’m against it (at all), but so far I’ve taken the more organic approach. People will spread my music if it’s available and they like it, etc. I’m not sure what else I’d have them do. I sort of hate it when bands hassle me to vote for them in some worthless bullshit contest — but I’m sure there are other things I’m not thinking of.

I definitely would appreciate any brainstorming help. Either here or in email (brad@bradsucks.net) would be sweet.

Me: “Did you get my email about Brad Sucks?”

Prominent Local Radio Host: “How the @$#% did you get my home number!?”

Brad

That would be great, then I could pay people to go stand in the radio host’s driveway and creep them out.

Get “Brad Sucks” stickers printed and send them out to fans. As odd as it sounds, I think Brad Sucks stickers would work great in the bathroom walls and stalls of bars and pubs. :) Just like the usual “Bob was here” and “For a great time…” carvings on the walls.

I’ve been telling everyone who I think might be into your ‘style’ about you since I first heard you. I mean everybody – friends, relatives, coworkers, gas station counter workers, people at the grocery store, …

Bumper stickers or fliers would be great!

A “Brad Sucks new record, ‘Out Of It’ available at http://www.BradSucks.net”; kind of thing.

I used to be a DJ at a local (Jacksonville, FL) college radio station. Sadly I left and graduated before I found Brad Sucks. I do plan on pursuing a career in radio (I hope), and if not, I will return to the college as an alumni and start a new show (I was continually in the top 5). I do pimp Brad to people I know who’d like him.

Hahaha Tony! I like that one. ‘Brad Sucks, spread the word’

People will think it’s funny and tell all the Brads they know. Then when they hear the music, the name will stick with them better. It’s a branding idea.

Stickers cost a little dough, but if you have a buddy who is a screen printer, or if you invest in a cheap, used press, you can get them done fairly inexpensively. Maybe a fan would want to do this.
(I know you already have shirts and stuff..)

Yeah I know, I totally rule. Btw I like the idea of (bumper)stickers as well.
