I’ve gotta get a site up for my stuff sometime soon. but I have no idea where to start.

Now. C is second nature to me. and the mixing board my closest friend. So it’s not an issue of technical ability. I just don’t even know the first step. :(

Brad. your site is hella nice and you do it all yourself. right? Tell me I don’t have to pay out the butt to have a nice site!

Nowadays I’d suggest you just grab a blogging CMS. I use Wordpress and there are tons of very nice themes available for it. So you can then customize it as needed.

For HTML help. I’d hit w3schools. It’s a good place to get started.

There’s also a hosted variety of WordPress at Wordpress.com if you’re looking to get up and running quickly.

Thanks. man. I actually managed to get it up and running on my server.

Now I’ve just gotta find a theme I can easily transform into what I’m trying to do…

Wordpress healthily combines the blog with standard site sections. right?

I’m thinking about building my layout from scratch via WordPress.

Is that advisable?

June 14, 2006 at 6:30 am #6316

Brad

Wordpress does “pages” if that’s what you mean. You can treat that as regular sections of your site.

As for building it from scratch: I would not advise that. it’s a total pain in the ass to get a decent cross-browser compatibility going on. If you look through the hundreds of themes available and find one that’s similar to what you want and tweak it. I think you’ll have a lot easier time.

Update: This is fun!

Just from my preliminary wankery. I’ve got a better site up and running than I’ve ever had.

Of course. that’s not saying much. :^

Thanks muchly. good sir!

It’s goin’ pretty smoothly so far. Everything’s up and running and I’ve changed all the graphics and style stuff over. I feel like it still owes too much to the original theme. though. I’ll probably draft out more substantial modifications with my graphic-designer friend soon.

As for the content. it’s easy to display different sidebar features on each page. right? I mean. I haven’t tried anything like that yet. And what about only displaying a certain category (like “Official News”) of blog posts on the front page and the rest somewhere else?

Brad

You may have to code some custom PHP stuff for different sidebars. That’s what I did. though there may be an easier way. Might want to post a message in the WordPress discussion forums and see if anyone knows of a plugin or easier technique.

uh. since we’re geeking on wordpress. have you guys looked at the widgets plugin for wordpress? They’re kinda neat and “ajaxy” but like all new things. prone to some issues.

Ah yes, some very cool stuff!

I’m putting the site on hold until my business partner comes back from Franceland. But it’s all very solid at this point. Thanks again.
