So I was very sick today and decided I would start writing actual songs on guitar and bass instead of making Techno/Trance songs on FL Studio, haha. People from my school always tell me that the stuff i write sounds really good but I am never satisfied. I used to make songs that i still like but whenever i try to write new ones i always am disappointed because I try to make them to complicated because i am not satisfied with simple riffs and chords. I decided to not care and try anyways so any tips on maybe just connecting everything so it has a nice flow to it.

-Any lyrical advice would help…Im not to good at that, cant ever write anyhting meaningful or anything of the such

One strategy I suggest to a lot of people regarding lyrics is to pick a title. Write the title at the top of a page and then start free-associating and write down anything the title makes you think of.

Don’t self-censor, don’t worry about rhyming or even making sense to anyone but you. Eventually you’ll have filled an entire page with words and phrases relating to the title.

Then, preferably on a different day when you’re fresh, take the raw material you’ve got on the page and try and sculpt it into something that’ll fit in your song. See if any themes pop out, is anything you wrote more meaningful to you than anything else? Any good words or rhymes you want to include?

Gradually fill in the pieces on several drafts.

If you’ve got any titles in mind I’d be happy to free-associate a bit with you here.

Thanks Brad, I managed to go into reaper and look through all my old songs and decided they were a lot better than I had thought when I recorded them, i added vocals to a few but some i felt like vocals would ruin it so left them untouched.

And thanks for that idea for lyrical writing, and for the offer to help me out a bit on here but I am gonna try this one on my own, and stop asking for help, haha

Thanks man

That’s cool. In my experience it’s better to finish something even if you’re not 100% happy with it rather than working it to death or waiting around for divine inspiration. You never know what people will like.

That’s true Brad, I think most of us also like your ‘dodgy’ stuff like Quit Complaining. At least I’m glad you published that song and I’ve even seen people saying it’s their favorite song from you, so you never know.

Yeah, I occasionally have to resist pulling old stuff offline. And I may give in one day but still, that was a step along the way.

I’d still be (proper adjective escapes me(humbled?)) if someone would be inspired by this.
