I mean no disrespect in calling these songs that. I’m just wondering what were the considerations when deciding the order of the songs on I Don’t Know What I’m Doing? I ask because I noticed the back up vocals on [B]Making Me Nervous and Look And Feel Years Younger are “la la’s.” Is it the order they were written? (which makes sense) Or is it with consideration of their ‘hook’ability? (which makes sense) Or was it for artistic reasons? Or any of another reasons? I wonder if any one has listened to the first two songs and decided all your stuff is too similar. Again, I mean no disrespect. I love this album.

“La la” is a pretty common backup vocalization technique, so I would think coincidence may be more of a reason than anything else. Then again, I’m not Brad. As far as similarities between his songs, I have yet to hear two songs of his that are too similar to one another, though I will definitely say that Brad does have a distinctive style overall.
I would list his stylistic trends as follows:
Laid-back, multi-faceted lyrics
Generally clear, catchy rhythms that are easy to sing along with
On some songs, the vocals are stylized and effected, on others the voice carries the tune
Sampling from a lot of genres, but talented enough to not “ape” them
That’s my two cents, at least.

Yea, I didn’t mean to suggest that I thought his songs are similar to each other. I just had a friend notice this, but I was there to make sure he listened to everything before judging.
I personally really like the way he blends his vocals and the very accomplished sound to his playing. That is all on top of the topics of the songs [those I can figure out :)] and the overall yet varied sounds of the music.

When I planned out the track list I was basically just considering the flow of the songs. It’s a fairly agonizing process but my thinking at the time was: start with Making Me Nervous (because it’s my most popular song), then do a style change and go to Look and Feel. Which is rock instead of dancey but still has a sort of similar laid back feel, then go into different things.
The idea was to ease the listener through the different styles of stuff I was doing without jarring them too much and I hadn’t noticed the la-las. I actually assumed I did that on more songs on that record, I’m surprised it’s only two.

I think you did an excellent job. I suspect Work Out Fine was an obvious finisher?

When I laid it out it seemed obvious to me, mostly because of the ending which I thought closed it off pretty good.
