If I only had the discipline and/or the time, I’d consider myself a writer. I’ve always ‘fantacied’ myself a lyricist. To that end I’d like to share with whoever may find use for the following. I wrote this back in the late 80’s while working at a press brake machine. I was challenged to do so after being overheard sharing my desire to be a lyricist with a fellow worker during a conversation about my ‘lack of understanding,’ if you will, of most Thrash. Other than Metallica, of whom I love, (pre-Black Album only) I still do not like most Thrash. Can Metallica even be put in that category? Anywho…

Each and Every One of Us

Has it never occurred to you
That your mind can leave your brain
And enter a dimension of space and time
Considered to be insane
Only to return to the moment it left
To remember the soul of your name

As if you had just begun to recall
An event that had yet to pass
Like feeling the feeling of falling
Awaiting your destiny calling
Then to land in a bed of soft sand
But it’s quick and your life’s out of hand

Now each and every one of us
Is a unique point of view
But at the very same moment in time
I ain’t no damn different than you

Step back
Get a grip
Check it out
And get hip!

If this inspires someone to set it to music, not that I am so presumptuous to think that it should, would, could, or even might have the potential to so inspire, I ask only to be credited as the writer. I’d like to be able to consider myself a real lyricist. If it does not so inspire I’d still be interested in feedback.

Thank you,

David B. Coleman II

If people can make it big by writing shit like “Girls who are boys who like boys to be girls who do boys like they’re girls who do girls like they’re boys…”, then why not something good like yours? Not half-bad lyrics, man. Not exactly my style, but good.

well give some credit to blur
their lyrics are incredible for the most part
and that line is good in the context of the very clever song that it’s a chorus of

and those lyrics are really good

Mmm…Ok, I see what you mean. At the time, I suppose it was brilliant. Still, I think that song sucks.

Then again, there are better Blur songs than Girls & Boys.

indeed
but anyhoo
have you heard the bassline in it?
rather great

but i love their slightly darker stuff like beetlebum and charmless man
those are where the best lyrics are

oh and then there damon albarns side project, like that african group, gorrilaz and the good, the bad and the queen

all pretty great

but this is very very off topic so i’m gonna shut up now

I love that it’s brought up a discussion like this. I only wish I had the time to check out what you are all talking about. Interesting though.

Thank you, all. btw

Yes, the bassline in that song is top notch. Thing is, I’m not really into Blur because I’m more of an Oasis/Beatles man. I mean, that’s where most of my music/inspiration comes from.

The battle of britpop rages on…

I was always a giant Oasis fan, i grew up listening to most of their stuff, but i got quite bored of them releasing the same album a couple of times with a different name.

And then about a year ago my little brother bought a Blur greatest hits type CD, and i stole it off him as I’d heard and liked ‘Song 2′. And then I found out that Blur are a really diverse and clever band.

That they are, but I’m still an avid Oasis/Beatles fan.

One thing that I never got is how Oasis was ever considered to be Britpop. I mean, listen to Live forever and then Parklife and tell me they sound alike.

But, no matter how much I like Oasis more, I’ve gotta give them props for their musical talent. Quite honestly, Coxon is one of the best guitarists I’ve seen.

As far as Oasis releasing the same album every year goes, I have this to say: 6 more albums just a good as Definitely Maybe? That’s the bollocks.

psh
I guess i’m being stupid due to tiredness and just spewing anything that comes into my head.

I think most musical Genres, especially pop sub-genres are sometimes more to do with the era than the music. Eg, lots of things considered britpop sound different, same goes for New-Rave.
