Anyone tried Kevin Rose’s new site Pownce yet? |

I use digg, but I don’t care too much for Kevin Rose. Founder of nifty site != gift to mankind. Plus, the HD-DVD fiasco left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. As for Pownce itself, looks really nifty, but I’m curious about the actual execution. If done well, this could be a great tool. If done badly, or if it suffers from the scalability issues seen with digg, it could be disappointing. . . |

I watched Kevin as a young lad on TechTV so he’ll always have a place in my heart. What sort of scalability issues did Digg have? I’m old, I can’t remember. |

That initial year was fine, but I remember right around revision 3 or so that there was a few months where they couldn’t seem to balance the exploding growth of users with the server constraints. I guess they shouldn’t face a similar situation with the closed, invite-only system. I’m more concerned of when they take the locks off and all the inevitable diggers start jumping on board. |

I guess I’m still stuck in a web 1.0 mindset; I have a really hard time understanding how to use all these (admittedly cool-looking) sites that pop up every month or so. What exactly do I do with Pownce? “You’ve got to see it! It’s like a combination of twitter and tumblr and flippy and hemhaw and oily and birchbat and…” |

I am really into a few Web 2.0 services, but Digg didn’t interest me when I tried it. I’m into niche content – this is why I love RSS feeds so much – and Digg really seemed to be the inverse to me. As for Pownce, after reading the description – how is this different from email? |

Brad, I posted a reply to your blog entry which I realized came off a little whiny and luddite. I really do agree the filesharing thing has value, like you said Brad, it’s like a private P2P network. And the funny thing is, my wife is sends a lot of large attachments, hi-res pictures mostly and this would be a boon to her, but there’s no way I could convince her to sign up. Most of these sites at the root, are social networks. I signed up for Virb which is like an adult MySpace, it’s got a clean look, hack your own CSS, WordPress and Flickr integration, and probably a bunch of functions I know nothing about. Problem is I only have 2 friends. I just can’t keep track of all these things anymore. I’m about to need to keep a logbook of all my usernames and passwords. I’m spread too thin to be effective any one place. Sigh. |

Yeah I’m getting pretty tired of having friend networks on every damn site in the world. Facebook’s been interesting because my actual family is in there. Why, I don’t know, but they are. And email’s pretty broken for just about everyone. Only Gmail seems to make it manageable to me and it still kinda blows. I’m never 100% sure I’m getting all my email. I do like the idea of casual connections with people that isn’t as direct as IM but not as formal as a weblog. Twitter’s nice when I know the people and they’re not just advertising their newest blog posts and shit. That + privacy + file-sharing seems like a winning combo. |

There for a day or two I had twitterfeed echoing my blog posts on Twitter but that didn’t fly with me, especially when I finished my web site. |

Okay, this network still seems to be running; http://mashable.com/2007/06/30/pownce-invites/ Instructions on getting an instant, user-powered invite. |

I’ve got five invites to give out if anyone wants ‘em. So far it’s not really blowing me away. I don’t feel okay pumping crap into it like Twitter and there aren’t enough people in there for me to put much care into anything I post so I’m not sure. |

Anybody still have an invite to give away? |

Yep, just email me at brad@bradsucks.net with the address you want it sent to. |

Thanks dude. For anybody else who likes to get into the ultra-secret startups, InviteShare.com worked pretty well for me. |

Somewhat off-topic: Does anybody miss the old digg? Like, pre-version-3? I remember way back when there were only 5-10 front-page stories per day and all of them were worth checking out. I’ve actually been using Reddit more often, but I don’t like its setup quite as much. On-topic: Pownce may not be innovative, but it seems like a good idea. Really, though, all those obscure social networking sites are pointless unless all of your friends are as nerdy as you. |
