I quickly recorded a demo of this faster version of There’s Something Wrong yesterday. It’s closer to how we play it live, though maybe it’s too fast, I’m not sure. Just trying to nail down a feel. The mix blows, but I thought I’d throw it up here:
There’s Something Wrong (faster demo)
There’s Something Wrong (original demo)

I prefer the faster demo. It has a more ‘pop’ sound than the original, tempo notwithstanding.
Whether you want it sound poppy or not is another matter…

I like the vocals better on the original demo. That might be the mix though.

Darg: I guess it depends what you liked better. The only thing really different is the verses are sung in a higher octave in the faster demo, I think.

I agree, the music (the lows particularly) seem to drown the vocals out on my setup. Although I could:
a) Have my sub turned up too far.
b) Be sitting too close to the sub.
edit: Other than that, the new demo sounds great, I love it a lot more than the original.

The chorus went from sounding like The Dandy Warhols to Lynyrd Skynyrd. …I’m dead serious.
I think that there is a happy medium somewhere in between the 2.

Huh, interesting. I’m not really familiar with the Dandy Warhols (except for Bohemian Like You) or Lynyrd Skynyrd (except for Freebird), so I’m not totally sure what that means.

I like the speed and how it sounds a lot, but I liked the lower vocals on the original.

Post script:
It’s really good to finally see (hear?) you posting some kinda new music!

I like the slower version a lot better, it fits the song. The vocals are really good, but not for this song.

I also like the slower version better, i think the faster version is too fast for vocals and the chords but i really like how the vocals sound in the fast version, but i still have to think that the slower version’s vocals suit the song

I like the original slow version. Your stuff is great, get it out there!

The first demo I liked because it felt a little muddled, as if there’s something “wrong” that you just can’t quite figure out. If you could get the cleaner sound of the faster version to mesh with the mellower tone of the vocals in the first, I’d think it’d be perfect.
Also, the more upbeat tempo seems to work against the song’s theme. Instead of there being something “wrong” in the elusive, vague sense, the new mix sounds like there’s something wrong, and you know exactly what it is, and it’s even making you a little peeved.
I wish I could express it a little better, but maybe you can gleam some meaning from my thoughts. Overall, I love your stuff, and am continually amazed at how often I can listen to your songs and relate to them intuitively.

I love the background vocals in the chorus. It seems like a somewhat unconventional harmony, which just makes it all the better.

Interesting, I tallied up all the input re: old and slow vs. new and fast that I got privately and on here. It’s exactly split down the middle. Fascinating. And confusing.
