I need a new guitar and I need help choosing. I enjoy three artists CAKE, Chuck Berry, and Robert Johnson (O and who can forget Brad Sucks). I was think a Gibson ES-335. Any help? Tell me what you use. |

Cort G250 Looks like your Gibson ES would be Chuck Berry-ish. Though a lot depends on the effects you run it through. |

I have a Custom Squier Modified Telecaster(painted sparkly purple), and a Rogue LXsomething-or-other bass. I have no preference of Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, whatever. If you are also getting a bass, I’d suggest a Fender. |

Off-the-rack white-on-black Squier Stratocaster. I figure I’ll upgrade once I start playing well enough to warrant something better (not yet). |

Me? Mainly a ’72 Tele Thinline, a Taylor 615, ’63 Gibson Melody Maker, Squier P-Bass, and an Ibanez AM-50. Less-often-used, at the moment, are the Kramer Pacer, ’81(ish) BC Rich Mockingbird, Harmony acoustic, Ovation acoustic, Alvarez classical, ’31 Gibson tenor, and a couple other acoustics. Always embarrassing to type that all out. For you, though — I’d really suggest taking a look at the Epiphone Dot series (at American Musical Supply, for instance) — great prices for an ES-335-type guitar. I’ve played a couple, and they felt and sounded *quite* nice. To the point where I’m tempted to replace the Ibanez with one. |

I’ve got a few Ibanez guitars that I switch off between. My newest one is an NDM1, which is a few years old. I haven’t purchased a new guitar in a while. I’ve also got an RG and two Jems. One is the JEM7VWH and the other is a Jem Jr (JEM555BK). I’ve got three Strats and one Samick acoustic guitar. I have a preference for Ibanez, but Fender is also a top choice. As far as equipment goes, I don’t have a whole lot to brag about. I use an old Peavey head unit and a speaker set. I’ve been using that more recently with my Line 6 PODXT Live. It does what I need it to do. I’m looking into getting a bass soon. I’d like to try it out and see what I can come up with. |

I just found an affordable Ibanez bass guitar at a local guitar shop and I think I’m about ready to buy it. It’s a GSR200 for $150 (used) with a gig bag. I was looking on MusiciansFriend prior to going to the guitar store and was strongly considering it. It’s $200 new on MF. I’d rather get it used. It’s in great condition. I won’t have an amp. I was going to get a really cheap one on MF, but now I’ll probably look in some music stores and buy a used one. I’d prefer to not have to pay for shipping and I’d like to get it as soon as possible. I’m pretty excited! |

Hey awesome! I read somewhere that Jack White of the White Stripes prefers used instruments because new ones haven’t proven themselves. The GSR200 looks swank, good luck, let us know how it goes. |

I got it today and it is great. It plays wonderfully, especially for the price. The sales person through in a gig bag and cable for no extra charge. I didn’t need either of those, but it never hurts to get free stuff. ;) I asked about using a combo amp made for a guitar and he said that as long as I didn’t turn it up too loud, it’d be fine. I didn’t see any amps in the store that I liked enough. I know another store with a very nice Peavey amp for $280 that I’ll probably try and get. It is a good balance between quality and cost. It’d be loud enough to stand up to my guitar rig. I’m having a blast with it. I’m playing with some songs and scales so that I can get together with some friends and jam. At the moment I’m using a small Peavey practice amp that I found at a garage sale a long time ago. It’s meant for guitars but I figured I’d rather not risk destroying any of my good guitar equipment. I don’t use the practice amp anymore, so it’s a decent temporary solution. It sounds fine (but I still want to get my Peavey bass amp ASAP) and hasn’t gone up in smoke yet. ;) Here is the amp I’m looking at getting. Eventually I want to get a cabinet and head unit and run a Bass PODXT Live through that. That’s not happening anytime soon, though. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Peavey-MAX-115-Bass-Combo?sku=481445 |

One thing I learned recently about guitar amp sims (like the Boss GT-6) which should be obvious but wasn’t to me is that if you’re going to use an amp sim you should run it out of something flat like a keyboard amp or a PA monitor. Otherwise your amp sim will be colored by your amp which defeats the whole purpose. I assume that’s what the Bass PODXT does… Anyway just FYI… |

Here’s a Peavey story for ya’. I live in FL where afternoon thunderstorms pop up, I mean they can dump an inch or two in an hour. Back when I was younger I did a weeklong stint every summer as a camp counselor. So my friend and I were traveling there with our amps in the back of his truck, my amp was face up, with a tarp over everything. Well one of the storms popped up and about 30 minutes into it and I noticed the tarp was flapping. Visibility was too bad to stop, but luckily we drove out of it in about 5 minutes. We got out and checked the amps, I poured about 2 quarts of water out of the cone of my bass amp. So anyway, we get to our destination, I let it dry overnight, plugged it in the next morning, and damned if it didn’t work. That was over 17 years ago, and I use it to this day. Whatever else you say about Peavey, they know how to make them. |

Yeah, Peavey builds some solid stuff. That’s awesome that the amp was able to survive a soaking. Brad, that’s a good idea. I’ll look into that further down the road, when/if I actually get the Bass POD. It may be awhile, it’s not exactly cheap. ;) |
