Does anyone know what the deal with Windows Vista and audio is right now? I kind of want to upgrade but I don't want everything to suck.

Not too much new, that I've tried. My tech teacher got it, and most of the changes I noticed are physical ones. And Halo 2. You can get it on the Windows website, copy an image to a disc, and then install it. You have to have Roxio or something else though.

They've made some changes to the way Windows deals with audio. They've included a new audio mixer that lets you mix audio levels per-application. As for low-level stuff like ASIO or DX audio, I'm not sure. If you're still in the process of tweaking audio for your album, I'd say hold-off until that's finished. Just to be on the safe side...

Yeah I probably won't bother until afterwards although I have a hard time resisting new software trinkets.

I understand. I suffer from the same affliction. I think you can rest-assured that other than eye-candy and a truly annoying new security manager. there is little to the new operating system that you will find you can't live without. I've been playing with Vista for over a month and find myself still using XP on my PC.

And yet I still want it. See. it makes no sense!

I recommend you not upgrade your computer and instead get an Xbox 360 and Gears of War. I believe this is the correct solution.

How's the Xbox 360 treating you? I really haven't been compelled to upgrade. though I may shell out for a Wii. And I heard great things about Gears of War but all the reviews are just like "IT'S THE BEST FIRST PERSON SHOOTER EVER. BEST" and don't really go into why it's so great.

My pal got a Wii on opening day. and except for Zelda. nothing really memorable has come down the pike yet. But launches can be like that.
The Wii-mote is much lighter. more precise. and easier to use than I had feared. I think developers just need a little time to get their heads around how to properly write for it.
Wait. I'm jacking a Windows thread. Sorry.

Guess I'll make a "jacking your Wii" joke.
It certainly looks like fun. I've never been much of a Zelda fan (haven't played any of them really) but I am a total Mario whore. I rented a Gamecube so I could finish Mario Sunshine in a weekend.
Also can you buy Gamecube games off their Virtual Console? I know you can do older stuff. I'd like to try some of the good Gamecube games.

I don't think there's any GC titles for the Virtual Console yet. but you can play Gamecube titles physically in your Wii. It can read the little Gamecube discs no problem. Which is good 'cause I think you can get GC titles a bit cheaper now.

Oh neat. Yeah that'd be good enough for me. I always wanted to try that cute Zelda game for the GC.

You can just put Gamecube discs in the Wii. and you can play it. Also. there's a separate section on the top for the GC controllers and memory cards.

Vista is craptacular at worst. unconvincing at best. I had Ultimate for about two weeks. but finally decided to go back to XP after the nine billionth "Are you sure you want to ________?" popup that wouldn't die. User Account Control is quite honestly the worst excuse for "protection" I've ever seen. All of the eye candy means little to me when the OS itself locks me. the friggin' USER. out of my own machine in a half-hearted attempt to "protect" me.

I'm still pretty jazzed to upgrade but I was talking to Peter Kirn from Create Digital Music the other day and he described how poorly Ableton Live works under it right now so I think I'll be waiting until I hear some other people give the OK.

My dads company upgraded. so we got Ultimate for free! YAYZ!

How are you finding it? Several of my friends have now switched back to XP for various reasons (mostly software compatibility) but they all said XP is light years faster.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Eh, I use Vista on my laptop and it actually is faster than XP or even Ubuntu. I think this is because Vista specifically has improvements for laptop speed. All of my software works, and if I had a USB box for input for audio recording, I'd buy Magix MusicMaker and be in heaven. XP might be faster for some things, but .NET applications run faster on Vista since it's integrated tightly into the OS, so the Office apps open up instantly for me.

Faster .NET would be nice. Most .NET things on XP are insanely slow. Like Windows Live Writer, which is a great little blogging program, but even on my dual core system here it loads like a beast.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Yes, Writer is still slow even on Vista... I think they must have debugging enabled or something because it takes my laptop like 6 seconds to load the thing up.
Posted 3 years ago # -
It's about six seconds here as well. I think it's the one thing that didn't get any faster when I doubled my processor speed recently.

Well, I'm currently running Windows 2000 Pro, Windows XP, and Windows Vista all at the same time on the same box :)
How, you ask? Ubuntu Linux + VMWare + Dual Core w/ plenty of RAM = insane multitasking and program testing.
When I finish my usual gauntlet of environments test I happily live in Ubuntu only.
Whee.

I've been meaning to try out VMWare. How well does it perform compared to a dedicated system? I assume there's gotta be a pretty significant performance hit.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Nowhere near as much as you'd think. Once you've installed the VMWare Tools drivers in your Windows environment, it's near 100% speed. The only downer is the limited hardware available in a virtualized environment (hence, no good 3D gaming support. . .yet).
However, if you're using it to run the average Windows application under Linux, this is par excellence.

I almost had to bust out the VMWare today to try and salvage something off an ext3 hard drive. But then it turned out the drive was fine and it was just the power supply of that machine screwing with me. Fun morning.

If you don't mind walking on the questionable side of copyright law, I can give you a link to a file that will make WinXP look pretty much exactly like Vista.
